Chapter 3 - The Backup Generator

The chandelier died.
The candles stayed alive.
For three seconds, nobody moved.
Then the house made a low mechanical hum as the backup generator started.
Soft amber lights returned along the baseboards, leaving the dining room dimmer than before.
Claire used the darkness.
She slid the unsigned second page beneath the first.
Daniel reached for his phone.
“Storm?”
“There’s no storm,” Claire said.
Vanessa looked toward the windows.
Outside, the night was clear.
Daniel’s phone showed no outage alert.
That was when Claire heard the electronic click from somewhere near the foyer.
The security system.
A lock engaging.
She looked at Daniel.
He noticed.
“Generator resets the doors,” he said.
“Since when?”
“Always.”
“No, it doesn’t.”
Silence.
Vanessa drank water.
Daniel smiled again.
“Maybe I’m remembering wrong.”
Claire closed the folder.
“I’m not signing this tonight.”
His smile vanished.
“Claire.”
“I said no.”
“It’s just a temporary authority form.”
“Then it can wait until morning.”
Vanessa put down her glass.
“The filing deadline is midnight.”
Claire turned to her.
“You seem unusually familiar with my family paperwork.”
Vanessa flushed.
“I helped Daniel organize it.”
“You helped my husband organize documents giving him control of my finances?”
“Claire,” Daniel warned.
“No. I’m asking a question.”
The room changed.
Not loudly.
No one shouted.
But the pretending stopped.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Sign the document.”
Claire looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because I asked you to.”
“That stopped being a good enough reason about five minutes ago.”
His jaw tightened.
Vanessa whispered, “Daniel.”
The next minutes moved fast, and every answer only exposed a deeper part of Daniel’s plan.
ACCESS DENIED.
Daniel stopped five feet behind her.
“I told you. The generator reset it.”
Claire looked at the wall panel.
Under the denial message, a second line appeared.
ADMIN CODE CHANGED: 10:47 PM.
Claire turned around.
Daniel’s face went still.
Someone had changed the code twenty minutes before dinner.
Then Claire’s phone vibrated.
An unknown number had sent a photograph.
It showed Daniel and Vanessa kissing in Claire’s own garage.
