Chapter 19 - The Woman Who Died

Claire did not remember sitting down.

One second she was standing.

The next she was on the floor of the Vermont shed, phone against her ear, listening to a dead woman breathe.

“Claire,” Evelyn said again.

Claire began to cry.

Not quietly.

Not neatly.

Twelve years broke open at once.

“You’re alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

Claire covered her mouth.

“You’re alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I know.”

“You let me think you were gone.”

“I know.”

“Dad knew?”

“Yes.”

Claire’s grief turned to anger.

“Then why didn’t either of you tell me?”

“Because the people who tried to kill me were watching you.”

“They still were!”

“I know.”

“And Daniel?”

Evelyn was silent.

Claire understood.

“You knew he married me.”

“Yes.”

Claire stood.

“You knew?”

“I learned two years after the wedding.”

“And you stayed hidden?”

“I was told Daniel had turned against the network.”

“He put something in my wine last night.”

Evelyn gasped.

Claire’s voice shook.

“He tried to have me declared incapacitated. He kidnapped Maria. He took Owen.”

“I didn’t know.”

“No. You just left us alone with him.”

The line went quiet.

Then Evelyn said, “You have every right to hate me.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I don’t even know you.”

That hurt more than shouting would have.

Evelyn gave Claire an address.

A protected property outside Montreal.

Federal officials were already moving her.

Thomas Bell had been living under another identity nearby.

They had stayed hidden because the financial network still operated across multiple countries.

Peter looked older with every sentence.

Vanessa sat alone by the shed wall.

Rachel received another call.

The next minutes moved fast, and every answer only exposed a deeper part of Daniel’s plan.

One of the federal contacts.

Daniel texted:

SOMEONE TALKED.

Claire typed:

WHO?

His answer:

ASK NATHAN WHY YOUR FATHER CHANGED HIS WILL THREE DAYS BEFORE HE DIED.

Claire looked up.

Nathan’s face told her he already knew what was coming.

“What did Dad change?”

Nathan slowly removed his glasses.

“He removed you as sole beneficiary.”

Owen, bruised but alive, joined by video call from the hospital.

“What?”

Claire’s voice became very quiet.

“Who did he add?”

May you like

Nathan looked at her.

“Daniel.”
