Chapter 9 - The Clock

Daniel reached the foyer first.

Claire shouted, “Owen!”

Owen caught him near the staircase.

They slammed into the wall.

A framed photograph fell and shattered.

Vanessa screamed.

The two men from the SUV moved toward the open front door, but Nathan stepped into their path.

“You touch anyone, and you become part of this.”

One of them hesitated.

Good.

Claire reached the grandfather clock.

Daniel was still fighting Owen.

“Claire, don’t!”

That confirmed everything.

She opened the narrow lower cabinet.

Nothing.

Her father’s phrase echoed in her head.

Ask the clock.

Not open it.

She looked at the face.

The brass hands showed 11:58.

The clock had been five minutes slow for as long as she could remember.

Her father refused to fix it.

“Time should remind you not to trust it,” he used to joke.

Claire reached behind the pendulum housing.

Her fingers touched tape.

She pulled out a small brass key.

Daniel stopped fighting.

His face went white.

Claire held it up.

“What does this open?”

He said nothing.

Maria spoke from the kitchen doorway.

“The old wine cellar.”

Claire looked at her.

“There is no old wine cellar.”

Maria nodded.

“Your father closed it after your mother died.”

A memory flashed.

A narrow door beneath the back stairs.

Painted over.

Hidden by a built-in bookshelf during the remodel.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“You knew.”

He shoved Owen away.

“Claire, listen to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand what your father was involved in.”

“Then I’ll let him explain.”

“He’s dead.”

“But his evidence isn’t.”

Claire headed toward the back hall.

Daniel followed.

Owen blocked him again.

Nathan said, “Let her go.”

The next minutes moved fast, and every answer only exposed a deeper part of Daniel’s plan.

Claire inserted the brass key.

The safe opened.

Inside sat a black ledger, three flash drives, and a digital voice recorder.

On top was another envelope.

CLAIRE ONLY.

She opened it.

One sentence.

If Daniel is still in the house, do not play the recorder where he can hear it.

From upstairs came a scream.

Vanessa.

Then the sound of the front door slamming.

Owen ran toward the stairs.

Claire grabbed the recorder.
