Chapter 14 - Thomas Bell

They moved to the police station before dawn.
Maria sat in an interview room with both hands around a paper cup.
The call had lasted forty-two seconds.
Long enough for the man to prove he knew things only Thomas Bell would know.
The nickname he gave Maria on their honeymoon.
The scar on their son’s chin.
The song playing when they bought their first house.
Then he had said one final thing.
“Do not trust Peter Cross.”
And hung up.
Vanessa stared at the table.
“My father is seventy-one.”
Rachel said, “That doesn’t make him harmless.”
Claire watched Vanessa closely.
“You really didn’t know?”
“No.”
“You knew about the transfer.”
“Yes.”
“You knew about the clinic plan.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“You knew Daniel was cheating the foundation.”
“I knew he was moving money. I thought it was corporate restructuring.”
Claire laughed without humor.
“You’re an attorney.”
“I wanted to believe him.”
“So did I.”
That silenced the room.
At 3:14 a.m., officers found Daniel’s abandoned jacket in a service alley.
At 3:27, his phone pinged near the river.
At 3:35, it went dark.
Rachel believed he was fleeing.
Claire did not.
Daniel had spent years planning.
He was not running blindly.
At 4:02, Nathan arrived with a second envelope from Harold’s safe-deposit box.
Inside was a single photograph.
Claire’s mother.
Peter Cross.
Thomas Bell.
And a fourth person.
A young Daniel.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
HE SAYS HE WANTS OUT. I DON’T BELIEVE HIM.
Claire studied the picture.
Daniel looked barely twenty-five.
Nervous.
Thin.
Nothing like the confident man she married.
The next minutes moved fast, and every answer only exposed a deeper part of Daniel’s plan.
Vanessa stood.
“My father has a house outside Boston.”
Rachel looked at her sharply.
“Address.”
Vanessa gave it.
Claire’s phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
No text.
Only a photograph.
It showed an old blue door.
Claire recognized it immediately.
Her mother’s garden shed.
The one that had been removed from their childhood home after Evelyn died.
Below the photograph, Daniel had written:
SHE HID THE ORIGINAL THERE.
May you like
Then a second message arrived.
PETER IS ALREADY ON HIS WAY.
