Chapter 11 - The Fourth Name

The attempted transfer came from Mercer Biotech's internal legal portal.

The login belonged to Julian's chief financial officer, Martin Vale.

Julian refused to believe it.

Martin had been his friend for twenty years.

They had built the company from a rented lab and three folding tables.

"Check the access logs," Julian said. "Someone stole his credentials."

The logs showed a biometric confirmation.

Martin's fingerprint.

Police reached him at the airport.

He was boarding a flight to Zurich with one suitcase and a one-way ticket.

By noon, Martin sat across from Detective Cole with an attorney at his side.

At first he denied everything.

Then Cole placed four photographs on the table: Vivian, Conrad Pike, Darren Wells, and Martin.

"We have three people pointing toward you," Cole said.

Martin laughed nervously. "You have desperate people protecting themselves."

Cole opened a folder.

"We also have a wire transfer of six hundred thousand dollars from a company controlled by Celeste Grant to an account in your wife's maiden name."

Martin stopped laughing.

Julian watched from behind the one-way glass.

Maya stood beside him with her wrist still wrapped.

"Why?" she asked.

Julian's answer came out hollow. "Money. It is always easier when the answer is money."

Martin finally spoke.

"It wasn't supposed to be murder. Vivian said Lily would be sent away. A private school overseas. Julian would sign the new trust language after a custody crisis."

Cole leaned forward. "And the balcony?"

Martin looked down.

"That was Vivian. She stopped listening to the plan."

"What plan?"

"Discredit the maid. Make Lily look unstable. Force Julian into a guardianship arrangement. Then move the shares under emergency corporate authority."

Julian's hands curled into fists.

Martin kept talking.

"Conrad designed it. But Conrad did not design the first plan."

Cole's expression changed.

"What first plan?"

Martin swallowed.

"The one involving Ava."

He looked directly at the glass, as if he knew Julian stood behind it.

"That came from Vivian alone."
