Chapter 5 - The Man Behind the Pantry Door

Detective Cole drew his weapon before the second crash.

"Stay here."

Maya did not.

Neither did Julian.

They followed at a distance as Cole and another officer moved through the dark hall. The kitchen lights were off, but moonlight spilled across the marble island.

The pantry door stood open.

A shadow moved behind it.

"Police! Show me your hands!"

A man exploded out of the pantry and slammed into the second officer.

Maya caught one glimpse of a black jacket and shaved head before he ran toward the mudroom. Julian grabbed a chair and shoved it into the man's path. He stumbled, recovered, and reached the back door.

Cole tackled him before he made it outside.

The prepaid phone skittered across the tile.

Maya recognized the man.

"That's Darren."

Julian stared. "My driver's assistant?"

Darren Wells had worked for the family less than six months. Quiet. Polite. Forgettable.

In his pockets, police found two keys, three hundred dollars in cash, and a tiny screwdriver that matched the screws on Maya's hidden camera.

Darren said nothing until Cole showed him the phone.

Then he asked for a lawyer.

At 2:10 a.m., police found something worse in the pantry ceiling: a plastic envelope containing printed screenshots of Maya's private calls and a typed statement she had never written.

The fake statement claimed Maya had become emotionally attached to Lily and planned to "take the child away from an unhealthy home."

Julian read the sentence twice.

"They were going to blame her."

Maya felt cold.

"If Lily died, Vivian would say I was obsessed. Maybe that I grabbed her and lost control."

Cole nodded grimly. "And missing video would help create doubt."

Julian sank into a chair.

For the first time, Maya saw a man who had built companies, negotiated hostile takeovers, and survived the death of his first wife look completely helpless.

Then Cole's partner walked in holding a folder taken from Darren's car.

"We found this under the driver's seat."

He placed it on the counter.

The top page was a copy of Lily's trust agreement.
