Chapter 16 - The Hearing

The courtroom was packed.

Vivian entered in a navy dress instead of jail clothes because her attorney wanted the judge to see a wife, not a defendant.

She looked composed until she saw Maya.

Then her mouth tightened.

The defense attorney spent forty minutes attacking Maya's credibility.

"You admit you knew the child's mother before working for the Mercer family?"

"I delivered food to her home several times."

"You hid that from Mr. Mercer."

"I failed to mention it."

"You became unusually close to Lily."

"I cared about her."

"You secretly recorded concerns about Mrs. Mercer."

"No. Someone secretly recorded me."

The attorney paced.

"And on the night in question, you claim you happened to be in exactly the right place to catch a falling child."

Maya stared at him.

"I was doing my job downstairs. I heard Lily cry. I looked up. I ran."

"A remarkable coincidence."

"A child is alive because of it."

The prosecutor then called the hospital forensic interviewer, who explained that Lily's statements had been obtained using non-leading methods.

Next came the pediatric specialist, who testified that bruising patterns were consistent with repeated gripping and restraint.

Then Detective Cole introduced the hidden camera from Maya's room and the fake statement found in Darren's possession.

The defense objected.

The judge allowed it.

Finally, the prosecutor played security footage recovered from a secondary cloud cache maintained by the camera manufacturer.

The twelve deleted minutes had not disappeared everywhere.

The courtroom went silent.

On screen, Vivian pulled Lily into the hall.

"Stop crying," she said.

Lily backed away.

Vivian grabbed her.

Maya heard her own recorded scream from downstairs.

"Don't let her go!"

Vivian lifted Lily over the rail.

"Watch her fall."

Then she released her.

Julian closed his eyes.

Vivian's composure cracked.

"Turn it off!"

The judge ordered her to sit down.

But the footage kept playing.

After Maya caught Lily, Vivian leaned over the railing and whispered something the room microphone barely captured.

The audio technician increased the volume.

Vivian's voice came through the speakers.

"Conrad is going to kill me for messing this up."

The prosecutor looked at the jury box, though no jury had been seated yet.

The conspiracy was no longer theory.

It was on video.
