Chapter 3 - The Bruises Tell a Story

The ambulance arrived before the police.
A paramedic examined Lily in the library while Julian knelt beside her. Maya refused treatment until Lily had been checked twice.
"Possible concussion," the paramedic said. "And these bruises are not all from tonight."
Julian looked up.
There were faint marks along Lily's upper arm, a yellowing bruise near her ribs, and two small fingerprints beneath her jaw.
"How long?" Julian asked.
"Some are several days old. Some older. A pediatric doctor will date them more accurately."
Lily stared at the floor.
"Sweetheart," Julian said, his voice breaking, "did someone hurt you?"
Vivian stood in the doorway with a police officer beside her.
Lily saw her and instantly curled into Julian's chest.
That reaction answered more than words could.
"She falls all the time," Vivian said quickly. "She's clumsy."
Maya could not stop herself. "Children do not bruise under the jaw from falling."
Vivian's eyes cut toward her.
The officer noticed.
At the hospital, doctors placed Maya's wrist in a splint. Nothing was broken, but the ligaments were badly strained. Lily was luckier than anyone had a right to expect. No skull fracture. No internal bleeding. A deep bruise across her back where Maya's arms had caught her.
A child protection specialist named Dana Brooks arrived just after nine.
She asked to speak to Lily without Julian or Vivian in the room.
Vivian objected so loudly that security had to move her into the waiting area.
Forty minutes later, Dana came out holding a yellow legal pad.
"Mr. Mercer, your daughter described several incidents that concern us. Locked closets. Meals withheld. Being told her mother died because she was disobedient."
Julian's face collapsed.
"Her mother died of cancer. Lily knows that."
"She did know it," Dana said. "Someone has been rewriting the story."
Maya sat very still.
Dana turned to her. "Lily also said there is a room in your house where the camera never turns off. She called it the blue room."
Julian frowned.
"We don't have a blue room."
Maya did.

Her bedroom walls were blue.
And someone had been watching her.
