Chapter 11 - The Boardroom Trap

Claire did not cry.
Maya expected anger, denial, maybe one of Claire’s sharp little laughs.
Instead, she went very still.
“My mother?” she said.
Henry nodded. “Margaret controlled the family office in 2009. She created North Bell with Grant’s help.”
Claire looked at Maya. “You knew this?”
“I learned it ten seconds before you did.”
Claire stared at her, searching for mockery.
There was none.
For the first time since the pool, they were not enemies standing across a social line. They were two daughters discovering their parents had built entire rooms out of lies.
Then Grant Mercer walked out of a boardroom with three attorneys.
“Perfect,” he said. “Everyone is here.”
Rebecca frowned. “For what?”
“The emergency board meeting.”
Charles arrived from the opposite hall. “I didn’t call one.”
Grant smiled. “Your wife did.”
Margaret Whitmore appeared on the wall screen inside the boardroom.
Seventy years old, silver-haired, composed.
She looked like the kind of woman who never raised her voice because other people did the shouting for her.
“Come in,” she said.
The board members took their seats.
Maya remained standing.
Margaret looked directly at her. “Laura’s daughter.”
Maya’s hands went cold.
“You knew my mother.”
“I respected her. That was her mistake.”
Charles slammed a hand on the table. “Enough.”
Margaret barely looked at him. “Sit down, Charles.”
And he did.
That scared Maya more than anything else.
Margaret announced that new evidence proved Maya had manipulated company systems, fabricated vendor links, and triggered the merger pause for personal reasons tied to an old family grievance.
Rebecca stood. “That is false.”
Margaret clicked a remote.
A video appeared.
Maya, in her intern clothes, entering floor forty-seven after midnight.
Then another clip showed her plugging a device into a workstation.
The timestamp was three weeks earlier.
Maya watched herself on screen.
Except it was not her.
Same height. Same hair. Same blazer.
Claire whispered, “Someone dressed like you.”
Margaret smiled.
May you like
“Or perhaps Maya Reed is exactly what she looks like.”
Then the boardroom doors locked.
