Chapter 15 - The Father Who Lied

The gun never fired.
Henry Reed came through the loading door and hit Margaret’s arm from the side.
The shot cracked into the ceiling.
Police flooded the warehouse.
Grant dropped to his knees.
Margaret did not.
Two officers forced her hands behind her back while she stared at Henry with pure hatred.
“You,” she said.
Henry’s breathing was ragged. “Me.”
Elena stood frozen.
Then she looked at him.
Seventeen years passed across her face in one second.
“You told Laura I was safe,” she said.
Henry’s voice broke. “I thought you were.”
Maya turned. “What does that mean?”
Elena looked at her.
“Your father saved me in 2009. Then he lost me in 2012.”
Henry lowered his head.
Maya felt anger return, sharper than before.
“Lost you?”
Elena sat on a crate while paramedics checked her wrists.
“Margaret found me. She threatened my sister. Threatened Laura. Threatened you.”
Maya’s chest tightened.
“My mother knew?”
“Yes.”
“Until when?”
Elena’s eyes filled. “Until the week before she died.”
Maya went still.
Her mother had died in a highway collision.
Rain. A truck. A police report. A funeral she barely remembered because grief had erased whole days.
“Are you saying my mother’s death wasn’t an accident?”
Henry whispered, “Maya—”
She turned on him. “Did you know?”
“I suspected.”
“You suspected for fourteen years?”
“I had no proof.”
“You had me.”
His face crumpled.
“You had a daughter who deserved the truth.”
Maya walked away before she said something she could never take back.
Behind her, Elena called out.
“Maya.”
She stopped.
Elena held out a tiny brass key.
“Your mother gave me this the last night I saw her.”
“What does it open?”
“A safe-deposit box.”
“Where?”
Elena looked at Margaret being led toward a police car.
“Inside Whitmore headquarters.”

Then Margaret smiled through the warehouse window.
Like she already knew what was in it.
