Chapter 17 - The File Marked MAYA

Charles did not answer his phone.

His driver had not seen him since the board meeting.

His apartment was empty.

Maya, Rebecca, and Ethan went straight to the executive vault where the safe-deposit boxes were housed.

Box 318 was open.

Inside was one envelope.

Not the ledger.

Not money.

A file marked MAYA.

Her name.

Her life.

Maya opened it.

School photographs.

College applications.

Copies of her first employment contract.

Flight records.

Pictures of her leaving her apartment.

Some dated only three months earlier.

Ethan whispered, “Jesus.”

Maya turned pages faster.

Someone had watched her for years.

At the bottom was a letter in her mother’s handwriting.

Maya recognized it instantly.

Maya,

If you are reading this, then the thing I tried to keep away from you has found you anyway.

Her hands began to shake.

Laura Reed wrote that she had discovered Margaret’s network extended beyond Whitmore. Politicians, contractors, private equity funds, and consultants had used acquisition budgets to route kickbacks for more than a decade.

The original ledger proved it.

Laura had hidden the ledger where Margaret would never willingly look.

Maya read the next line twice.

With Charles.

She looked up.

“Charles had it.”

Ethan shook his head. “Then why open the box?”

“Because he came for the letter.”

Rebecca found a folded receipt beneath the file.

Union Station locker rental.

Paid that morning.

Maya called Charles again.

This time he answered.

“Where are you?” she demanded.

His voice sounded winded. “Maya, listen carefully.”

“Do you have the ledger?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you give it to investigators?”

“Because it names people who will do more than destroy a merger to get it back.”

“Where are you?”

“Union Station.”

A loud crash came through the line.

May you like

Then Charles said, “They found me.”

The call ended.
