Chapter 13 - Claire's Offer

Grant disappeared into the stairwell.
Security searched forty floors and found nothing.
His abandoned car sat in the garage. His home was empty. His company laptop had been wiped remotely.
But he had dropped his phone.
And Grant Mercer’s phone was a map of everybody he feared.
Rebecca’s forensic team recovered partial messages, encrypted contact names, and one calendar entry for that night.
11:30 P.M. — C.W. / PRIVATE / HOTEL BELLWETHER.
Charles Whitmore denied the meeting.
Claire did not.
“It was me,” she said.
Maya looked at her across a quiet conference room.
“You were meeting Grant?”
Claire nodded. “He told me he could protect me from the foundation transfers.”
“In exchange for what?”
“My board vote.”
“Against your father?”
Claire looked ashamed. “Yes.”
Maya leaned back. “You nearly helped your mother take control.”
“I didn’t know it was her.”
“You also pushed me into a pool.”
Claire closed her eyes. “I know.”
“That part wasn’t Grant.”
“No.”
“Or your mother.”
“No.”
Claire swallowed. “That was me.”
Maya waited.
“I saw an intern standing near people I wanted to impress,” Claire said. “I thought humiliating you would make them laugh. That sounds disgusting because it was disgusting.”
Maya said nothing.
Claire reached into her bag and placed a small silver key on the table.
“My mother keeps a private office at the Bellwether Hotel. Suite 1908. She thinks I don’t know.”
“Why are you giving me this?”
“Because if Elena is alive, my mother will move her before midnight.”
Maya studied her.
“You expect forgiveness?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Claire nodded.
Then she slid over a second item.
A memory card.
“What’s that?” Maya asked.
“My mother’s driver has a dashboard camera.”
Maya inserted the card into a secure reader.
The latest video showed Margaret getting into a car that morning.
She was not alone.
A frightened woman with dark hair sat beside her.
Older now.
But unmistakable.
Elena Marlow.
Maya looked at the timestamp.
Twenty-two minutes ago.
