Chapter 7 - Whitmore's Son

Maya left the cafe angry enough to shake.

Her father had lied about Chicago. Lied about Elena. Possibly lied about money.

But anger could wait.

Facts came first.

Back at Whitmore headquarters, a man she had seen only in company photographs was waiting beside the elevators.

Ethan Whitmore, Charles’s younger son, had spent six years running the company’s West Coast operations. Unlike Claire, he wore no visible luxury except a good watch and the expression of a man who slept badly.

“You’re Maya.”

“So everyone keeps telling me.”

He almost smiled. “My father says you’re dangerous.”

“Your sister says I’m dramatic.”

“My sister thinks consequences are a personality flaw.”

That earned him half a smile.

Then he handed Maya a keycard.

“What is this?”

“Executive archive.”

“Why give it to me?”

“Because Grant Mercer ordered me to destroy old acquisition records last month.”

Maya’s expression changed. “Did you?”

“I destroyed boxes. I scanned them first.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t trust Grant.”

“Do you trust your father?”

Ethan looked toward the windows.

“Not enough.”

They rode to the archive level.

Inside a locked records room, Ethan connected a portable drive and opened a directory labeled 2009_RESTRUCTURE.

Hundreds of scans appeared.

Maya searched North Bell.

Thirty-seven results.

One was a board memo authorizing an emergency vendor exemption.

Signed by Charles Whitmore.

Another was a legal note recommending termination of Elena Marlow.

Signed by Henry Reed.

Maya stared at her father’s signature.

“No,” she whispered.

Ethan said nothing.

A third file was an audio transcript.

ELENA MARLOW: If you sign this, they own you.

HENRY REED: I’m trying to keep you alive.

ELENA: By helping them bury it?

HENRY: You don’t understand who is behind Mercer.

Maya’s eyes moved to the final line.

ELENA: Then tell me the name.

The next page was missing.

Behind them, the archive door clicked shut.

Ethan tried the handle.

May you like

Locked.

Then smoke began sliding under the door.
