Chapter 1 - The Order to Leave

"Take off that medal, Captain. You didn't earn the right to wear it."

Colonel Richard Mercer said it into a live microphone in front of two hundred soldiers, veterans, and family members.

Captain Emily Carter stood motionless beneath the golden lights of Fort Halden's ceremonial hall. On the wall behind Mercer hung a banner celebrating his thirty-eight years of honorable service. The medal on Emily's chest had been awarded for pulling three wounded soldiers out of a burning vehicle in Afghanistan. The man who signed the paperwork was dead.

"Sir," she said carefully, "my awards are verified in my personnel record."

Mercer smiled the way people smiled when they knew a room belonged to them. "Your record is under review. Until that review is complete, you will not represent this command at my retirement. You're dismissed."

A few heads turned. Most stayed fixed on the stage. Emily could hear the hard little sound of somebody setting a coffee cup onto a saucer.

"Am I being relieved of duty?" she asked.

"Don't make this uglier than it already is."

At the end of the front row, her mother held the retirement invitation Emily had paid to frame. Her father should have been in that chair. Sergeant First Class Daniel Carter had died seventeen years earlier after being blamed for a convoy disaster. Emily had joined the Army because she believed he had been innocent. Mercer had commanded the convoy.

Emily swallowed the words she wanted to say. She pivoted and walked toward the central aisle, her polished shoes striking the wood. She passed officers who had eaten at her table and borrowed her notes and promised they would speak for her. Not one met her eyes.

Then a chair scraped behind her.

"Colonel Mercer," a deep voice said. "I think you've dismissed the wrong officer."

A tall, bald general stepped into the aisle. Four stars shone on his shoulders. General Thomas Vance had not been listed among the guests.

Mercer went white.

And Vance, looking straight at Emily, said, "Captain Carter, did anyone tell you what really happened to your father?"
