Chapter 9 - The Hangar Invitation

"Absolutely not," Lena said. "You don't meet an involved witness alone in an airport hangar."

Emily stared at Hale's request. "Then why ask for me?"

"Because he wants control over who hears him."

They declined the conditions and offered a secure government location with counsel present. Hale waited twelve hours before agreeing. In the meantime, someone released a distorted clip from the ceremony online. It showed Emily leaving the room while a caption claimed she had been expelled for stealing valor.

By morning, strangers were calling her a fraud. Her mother received messages telling her that Daniel had shamed the uniform. The Army issued a short statement that the award remained valid pending any lawful review, but gossip traveled faster than clarifications.

Emily almost typed a response. Marcus stopped her.

"The people spreading it don't want an explanation," he said. "They want a fight they can screenshot."

At the interview, Hale arrived with a lawyer and the polished confidence of a man accustomed to difficult questions becoming someone else's problem. He acknowledged knowing Mercer, the contracts, and the route. He denied ordering any change.

Then Lena played the recording.

Hale's eyes moved to the speaker, and for the first time he forgot to arrange his face.

"Who gave you that?" he asked.

"Is it authentic?" Lena replied.

"It sounds edited."

"Which part?"

Hale asked for a break. His lawyer touched his sleeve, but he kept staring at Emily.

"Your father should have stayed quiet," he said, barely above a whisper.

Nobody moved. The court reporter looked up.

"Are you saying he was threatened?" Emily asked.

Hale recovered his smile. "I'm saying I won't answer another question without reviewing the evidence."

His lawyer ended the interview. As they walked out, Hale slipped something into Emily's hand: a folded receipt bearing the number of a storage unit and a date three days after Daniel died.

On the back he had written, MERCER DOESN'T KNOW WHAT'S THERE.
