Chapter 12 - The List of Families

Marcus had been compiling contact information for the convoy families so investigators could ask whether anyone else had received threats or misleading notices. He had consulted publicly available information and obtained permission before sharing private contacts. Someone had learned about the work anyway.

"Did you see who hit you?" Emily asked.

"A man in a hood. He grabbed the folder, I held on, and he took off when a truck turned into the lot."

Marcus reported the assault to local police. Lena arranged a statement and reminded them that one attack did not establish who ordered it. Emily hated that caution, but she knew the difference between proving a thing and wishing it proved.

The next morning, Emily visited the widow of Staff Sergeant Luis Moreno, one of the soldiers killed with Daniel. Maria Moreno still had the service program from his funeral tucked into a kitchen drawer. Her daughter, Elena, was now a nurse with a child of her own.

"They told me Luis followed a reckless sergeant," Maria said. "For years I blamed your father. I was angry at him because I couldn't be angry at a road."

Emily looked at the woman across from her. "You were told what they wanted you to believe."

Maria set two cups of coffee down and started crying. Emily did not move to fill the silence. They sat together until the worst of it passed.

Elena returned from work and listened to the corrected timeline. "If this is true," she said, "someone needs to tell the families together. Not one by one through rumors."

Emily agreed. They made a plan for a gathering at the community center, away from cameras and microphones. It would not be a press conference. It would be a place to hear what was known, what remained uncertain, and what each family needed.

Before Emily left, Maria brought out a sealed envelope Luis had mailed on the day he deployed.

"He told me to give this to Daniel if he ever came home," she said.
