Chapter 16 - The Money Trail

The payment was substantial but not, by itself, proof of bribery. Investigators compared corporate records, bank transfers, expense reports, and Mercer's financial disclosures. A pattern emerged: consulting fees moved through two firms whose owners had no obvious connection to the military contract.
Mercer, represented by counsel, denied wrongdoing. He said the payments were compensation for legitimate advice provided after deployment. Investigators asked what advice he had given and to whom. His answers changed across documents.
Emily was not invited into the financial interviews. She was back on duty, and her first day was painfully ordinary: a readiness meeting, a broken printer, and a lieutenant who forgot to bring the right attachment. That normality kept her upright.
At lunch Marcus brought two sandwiches. "You looked like you might forget to eat," he said.
"I might."
"Then I'm an excellent officer. I anticipated a logistical failure."
She laughed for the first time in days.
Ruth called that evening. She had found an old birthday recording of Daniel telling eleven-year-old Emily to keep asking questions, even when adults pretended not to hear. They listened together across the phone. Emily could hear Ruth breathing on the other end.
Then the news broke. Reporters had obtained portions of the storage records and the video from the ceremony. Headlines said the Army was examining serious allegations surrounding a long-ago convoy disaster. The article did not name Emily as a culprit, but it did name her father.
A national network asked for an interview. Emily refused until the families had received accurate briefings. She could endure strangers judging her. She could not endure Maria learning new details from a television graphic.

Later that night, Lena called with a development. Hale had requested a formal meeting through his lawyer. He would cooperate, he said, if prosecutors considered an agreement.
And he claimed he could prove Mercer knew the convoy might not come home.
