Chapter 11 - When Good People Get Scared

Mrs. Miller said a maintenance crew had arrived just after closing. They'd shown a work order and hauled the jukebox onto a truck.

"I didn't know," she said, voice cracking. "They looked official."

"What company?" Bear asked.

"Halcyon Facilities."

Rachel could barely contain her anger. "You saw what happened here this afternoon. Why did you let them take anything?"

Mrs. Miller braced her hands against the counter. "Because they knew my grandson's name. They said if I argued, he'd lose his scholarship."

Rachel fell silent. Fear could make strangers cruel, but it could also make decent people look away. She had been doing the same thing for nine days.

"Was there anything inside it?" Rachel asked.

"Maybe. When they rolled it out, something was rattling under the base."

Bear called a biker named Vic, who repaired coin-operated machines and knew which warehouse Halcyon rented. Vic agreed to check the loading bay, not break in.

Mrs. Miller's grandson was nineteen and had won a scholarship to study engineering. She showed Rachel his picture on her phone: a bright grin, a graduation gown, a hand raised against the sun. It explained her terror without excusing every choice she'd made. Rachel understood that Sloane's operation wasn't built on one man's cruelty. It relied on dozens of people making tiny compromises under pressure until no one could see the whole machine.

While they waited, Rachel noticed a narrow strip of blue tape beneath table six. She peeled it free. Three words had been scratched into the wood: NOT THE MACHINE.

Mrs. Miller stared. "That's new."

Rachel crawled under the table. A brass screw looked freshly turned. Bear handed her a coin. She loosened it and felt a small compartment give way beneath the booth's bench seat.

Inside was a memory card wrapped in waxed paper, along with a handwritten note.

IF YOU FIND THIS, DON'T TRUST ANYONE WHO CLAIMS TO HAVE THE FULL LIST. ASK WHO THE CHILDREN BECAME.

Bear read the note twice. "Elena wasn't just tracking buses," he said.

Rachel inserted the card into Mrs. Miller's old laptop. A video file appeared, dated six months earlier.

The first frame showed Thomas Bell shaking hands with Victor Sloane.

The second showed a room full of children's identification photographs.

And beside Thomas stood Officer Grant Cole.
