Chapter 6 - The Number Forty-Two

Rachel drove to an all-night laundromat, parked beneath its broken security light, and called the number Bear had written on a diner napkin.

He answered before the second ring.

"We're not coming back," she said.

"Good."

"There was another tracker on Lily's shoe. Number forty-two."

Silence. Then Bear said, "Throw the shoe out."

"My daughter needs shoes."

"I can buy her another pair. Right now, I need you to understand something. Forty-two isn't a tracking number. It's a shipment number."

"Shipment of what?"

"Children."

Rachel stared at the black machine spinning in the laundromat window. "No."

"I don't have proof of all of it. Elena followed fake passenger manifests at Halcyon. Some buses delivered people who never appeared on any school or shelter records. She was trying to find out why."

Bear told her that the number on the shoe looked like an indexing system used in the transport files Elena had described. He did not pretend to know which people were implicated or how many families had been hurt. That restraint made his explanation more frightening, not less. For once an adult was willing to say he didn't know. Rachel began making a list on the back of the diner napkin: what they knew, what they assumed, and what needed proof.

Owen leaned forward. "You mean kids disappearing?"

"I mean paperwork that made them disappear," Bear said. "That much I know."

Rachel wanted to hang up. She wanted the danger to be a misunderstanding she could apologize for and put behind them.

"Why Lily?" she asked.

"Elena may have given her the only original ledger."

At the next table, a young man folding towels glanced at them too long. He touched his ear. Rachel saw the wire running into his collar.

"Bear," she whispered, "somebody's here."

"Don't look at him again."

The man started toward them.

Rachel took Lily's hand and walked toward the rear restroom, Owen a step behind. A sign on the door read EMPLOYEES ONLY. She shoved it open and found a fire exit chained from the outside.

The young man called, "Ma'am, you dropped something."

Owen leaned close to Rachel's ear. "Mom. I know where Lily hid the notebook."
