Chapter 14 - The Offer No Mother Should Get

"No," Bear said when Rachel showed him the message. "That's a trade that ends with two hostages."

"He is their father."

"And your children need you alive."

Rachel hated that both things could be true. She paced the diner's dark kitchen while Mrs. Miller made coffee nobody wanted.

An attorney named Hannah Price arrived just before dawn. Elena had trusted her with a sealed packet months earlier. Hannah worked with a federal child-protection task force, but she refused to promise an easy arrest.

"We need a chain of custody," she said. "And we need witnesses who can survive cross-examination."

"We have video," Rachel protested.

"We do. But the defense will say it was edited. I can get a federal judge to preserve the evidence if we can authenticate its source."

Bear rubbed his jaw. "Elena can do that once she's stronger."

"Assuming she gets the chance," Hannah replied.

Rachel suggested a trap: make Sloane believe she had the card, then have agents follow him to Thomas. Hannah listened, disagreed with the risks, and contacted the task force anyway. No one pretended Rachel could set the terms of an operation alone.

Hannah kept her voice level while she made calls, but Rachel could hear the strain underneath. She'd spent years watching cases fail because a frightened witness was pushed into an impossible choice. She refused to make Rachel into a disposable hero in somebody else's plan. 'Your children need a mother more than we need a dramatic story,' she said. 'We'll look for a path that gives us evidence without making you bait.'

When Owen called from the motel, Rachel answered with an ordinary greeting she couldn't quite manage.

"Mom, Lily found something," he said.

"What?"

"In her shoe box. A drawing of the lady from the garage. There's a building behind her."

Lily took the phone. "It's where she told me the children wait. She drew it so I wouldn't forget."

Rachel asked for a photograph. The child's shaky picture showed a blue clocktower and a red door.

Hannah recognized it immediately. "That's the old county records annex. It's been closed for years."

Bear looked at the message from Sloane again.

"That's where he wants to meet," he said.

But Hannah was staring at something else in the drawing: a row of tiny stick figures behind a barred window.

"Rachel," she said, "there may still be children inside."
