Chapter 18 - The Box in Her Name

Hannah obtained emergency legal authority to retrieve the deposit-box contents with the bank's cooperation. Rachel provided the number Thomas had managed to tell her, and the bank manager confirmed a safe-deposit agreement under Marjorie Bell's maiden name, Keene.
Inside were three binders, a flash drive, and a handwritten letter addressed to Rachel.
She read the letter sitting on the bank's marble floor.
I thought money would fix everything. I was wrong before the first child disappeared. I should have gone to the police, but by then I had signed so many lies they told me I'd go to prison too. You deserve the truth even if you never forgive me.
Rachel folded the page. Thomas had finally put the children ahead of his reputation. She wasn't ready to call that redemption.
The binders connected Halcyon's transport contracts to forged guardianship orders and private transfers. Each payment matched a false case file in the memory card. The names were protected, but the accounting trail was unmistakable.
An agent brought the evidence to the task-force command post. Hannah called Elena's doctor. Elena was stable enough to give a recorded statement with counsel present.
Piece by piece, the case began to stand on more than frightened memories.
The letter contained no grand declaration of love. Thomas had written about a mortgage, an unpaid tax bill, and the afternoon he signed the first contract. Those ordinary details were what made it unbearable. The crime hadn't started with a villain laughing in the dark. It had started with a frightened man accepting money, telling himself he would ask questions tomorrow, and then choosing not to.
Bear sat beside Rachel in the bank lobby. "Elena asked me something before she went into surgery," he said. "She asked whether I'd risk being called a liar if that's what it took to keep one kid safe."
"And?"
"I said yes. Then I found your family and almost made you more afraid."
Rachel looked at the cracked skin on his hands. "You scared us. But you listened when I told you to stop deciding for me."
He nodded. "Still learning."
Hannah's phone buzzed. A judge had signed warrants for Sloane and Cole.
Before Rachel could smile, the federal team reported that both men had disappeared.

At the bottom of Thomas's letter, in smaller handwriting, Rachel found one last line.
If they vanish, look at the chapel at Mile Marker 18.
