Chapter 7 - The Secret in the Yellow Shirt

The man approached with Rachel's scarf in his hand. She had never owned the scarf.

"That's not mine," she said.

He smiled. "Then I must have the wrong family."

Owen stepped between him and Lily. The gesture made Rachel proud and sick at the same time. A child should not have to learn how to stand guard.

"Move," she told the stranger.

He reached for his jacket. Rachel yanked a laundry cart between them. Metal wheels shrieked. The stranger stumbled just long enough for them to race through the front entrance and into the pickup.

On the highway, Owen pointed at Lily's yellow shirt beneath her overalls.

"The lining," he said. "At the hem. She asked me to sew it in."

Rachel stared. "You know how to sew?"

Lily's small stitches were crooked, and several had knotted into the shirt's hem. Rachel could have cried at the care her daughter had taken. 'I didn't want you to worry,' Lily said. Rachel wrapped the shirt around her shoulders. 'You never have to protect me by carrying a secret that scares you,' she answered. Owen looked out at the empty road, but she saw him listening in the mirror.

"Grandma taught me. You were at work."

Lily looked ashamed. "I thought if I told you, the bad man would take it."

At a roadside rest area, Rachel pulled a little plastic sewing kit from the glove box. Her fingers were clumsy, and Owen had to cut the first stitch. A blue notebook, folded inside a plastic bag, slipped from the hem of Lily's shirt.

The cover was damp but intact. On the first page were dozens of names, dates, and bus-route numbers. Some entries were crossed out in red.

Near the bottom Rachel found: ROUTE 42 / BELL, L. / CONFIRM TRANSFER.

Her daughter's name.

In the margin someone had written: WITNESS, NOT SUBJECT.

"What does it mean?" Lily asked.

Rachel had no answer. Then she turned the page and saw a familiar signature beneath a payment authorization.

The signature belonged to her ex-husband, Thomas Bell.
