Chapter 4 - The Badge in the Window

"Back staircase," Mrs. Miller whispered. "It leads to the pantry."
Rachel pushed Owen ahead of her and lifted Lily onto her hip. The girl was getting too big to carry, but Rachel wouldn't let go.
As they squeezed through the pantry, a familiar voice rang from the front room.
"Rachel Bell? County sheriff's office. We're here to bring you home."
Officer Cole. His voice made the word home sound like a threat.
"Why is he here?" Owen asked.
"I don't know."
Bear appeared at the rear exit. "I know a little," he said. "Cole's not assigned to this county."
Mrs. Miller caught him by the arm. "I called dispatch. They say nobody sent a deputy."
Rachel stared at Bear. "How do you know all this?"
"Because the woman your daughter met was my sister. Her name was Elena Mercer. She was an accountant for Halcyon Transit. Three days ago, somebody pulled her from the river."
Bear had promised himself after his first military deployment that he would never frighten another child with an order barked across a room. Yet when he saw the light under the booth, training took over. His apology was not an attempt to earn Rachel's trust. It was the simple acknowledgment that he had crossed a line even while trying to help. The distinction mattered to her, though she could not yet say it out loud.
Lily made a small sound in Rachel's shoulder.
"Elena isn't dead," Bear continued. "She's in surgery. I got one message before they took her phone. It said: find the little girl in yellow."
"Then go to the FBI," Rachel said.
"I did. And somebody tipped off the men watching the hospital."
A knock struck the pantry's outer metal door. Once. Twice.
"Rachel," Cole called from the other side, "I know the kids are in there. You've made a mistake. Open up and we can fix it."
Owen reached for his mother's hand. Bear held out a set of truck keys but didn't force them on her.
"My bike's out front," he said. "There's a pickup behind the dumpster. You can drive. I'll distract them."
Rachel took the keys. For the first time in nine days, someone had given her a choice.

Then Cole spoke again, softly enough that only those nearest the door heard.
"Tell Lily I found her notebook."
