Chapter 11 - Expelled in Everything but Name

Principal Vale did not call it a suspension.
He called it "temporary removal pending review."
Ethan called it what it was.
"You're kicking me out."
Laura sat beside him in the conference room. Across the table were Vale, Danner, Victoria Whitmore, and a school attorney named Paul Mercer.
Mercer spoke smoothly.
"No final decision has been made."
"Then why did you take his ID?" Laura asked.
"Standard procedure."
"Why did you disable his school email?"
"Also standard."
"Why was he removed before you interviewed the students who took the laptop?"
Mercer paused.
Victoria answered instead. "Because Ethan has become disruptive."
Ethan leaned forward.
"Your son hits people."
"Allegedly."
"There are videos."
"Videos can lack context."
Laura laughed once. "A shoe on a kid's hand needs context?"
Victoria's eyes narrowed.
Mercer placed a document on the table.
"The school is offering a resolution. Ethan can complete the semester remotely. His scholarship will remain intact. The disciplinary matter will be sealed."
Laura read the first page.
"And in exchange?"
"Confidentiality. No public statements concerning students, staff, donors, or internal procedures."
Ethan stared at him.
"You want us quiet."
"We want to protect minors."
"You mean Mason."
Mercer slid a pen across the table.
Laura pushed it back.
"No."
Victoria's calm finally cracked.
"You should think about your son's future."
Laura stood.
"I am. That's why we're leaving without signing anything."
Outside, a man in a brown coat waited near the curb.
"Mrs. Cole? Ethan?"
Laura pulled Ethan closer.
The man held up a business card.
"Aaron Pike. Attorney. Ben Grant asked me to contact you."
Laura read the card twice.
"Why?"
"Because Ben kept records from Whitmore Construction, and your husband Daniel's name appears in them."
Ethan felt the world narrow around that sentence.
They met Pike at a small office downtown.
Ben was already there.
On the table sat three banker boxes and an old laptop.
"I should have done this years ago," Ben said.
He opened a folder labeled COLE.
Inside were copies of safety reports, photographs, and a handwritten statement Ben had made the week Daniel died.
One line was highlighted.
At 6:40 p.m., I observed Grant Whitmore arguing with Daniel Cole regarding inspection documentation. Whitmore stated, "Sign it, or I will find someone who will."
Ethan read it twice.
"Did you give this to investigators?"
Ben nodded. "Company lawyers said I was confused about the date. Then my statement vanished from the final internal report."
Pike opened the old laptop.
"There is more."
A video file appeared.
Security footage from the construction site.
Daniel Cole stepped into frame.

So did Grant Whitmore.
The timestamp was the night before Daniel died.
