Chapter 5 - The Report That Changed

Ms. Ruiz locked her classroom door after the boys left for the principal's office.

Ethan sat at the front desk, still shaking.

"You could have gone over that railing," she said.

"I know."

"Why did you go up there alone?"

He held the watch in his palm.

"Because adults keep telling me to be careful while he keeps doing whatever he wants."

The words landed between them.

Ms. Ruiz sat on the edge of her desk.

"You're right."

Ethan looked up.

She swallowed.

"You're right, and I am sorry."

He had not expected that.

"Last semester," she continued, "I reported Mason after he shoved another student in the parking lot. I wrote exactly what I saw. Two days later, Principal Vale returned the form and told me my language was 'too certain.'"

"What does that mean?"

"It means he wanted me to change 'Mason shoved him' to 'the students collided.'"

Ethan stared at her.

"Did you?"

Ms. Ruiz looked away.

"Yes."

His chest tightened.

"Why?"

"Because I was in my first year here. Because my mother was sick. Because this job pays for her insurance. Because I was scared. None of those reasons make it right."

She opened a locked drawer and removed a folder.

Inside were photocopies of handwritten notes.

Dates. Student names. Incident descriptions.

Mason's name appeared again and again.

"I started keeping copies after that," she said.

Ethan turned a page.

One report described a freshman being shoved into a trophy case. Another described a student quitting the soccer team after repeated threats. Three reports had handwritten instructions from administration: REVISE. REMOVE ASSUMPTION. USE NEUTRAL LANGUAGE.

"Why didn't you show someone?"

"I tried."

"Who?"

"Board compliance."

Ethan almost laughed. "Mrs. Whitmore runs the board."

"Exactly."

A knock hit the door.

Three hard taps.

Ms. Ruiz shoved the folder back into the drawer.

Mr. Danner's voice came through the glass.

"Elena. Open the door."

She did.

Principal Vale stood behind him.

"Ethan," Vale said, "your mother has been called. There was an allegation that you created an unsafe situation in the stairwell."

Ethan stood so fast the chair scraped backward.

"I created it?"

"Mason says you rushed him."

"He was holding my watch over the railing!"

Vale's gaze moved to Ms. Ruiz.

"Did you see that?"

She hesitated.

Ethan felt the old disappointment rise.

Then Ms. Ruiz straightened.

"Yes."

Vale blinked.

"I saw Mason holding Ethan's property over the stairwell. I saw Ethan nearly fall while trying to retrieve it."

Danner's face hardened.

"You should choose your wording carefully."

Ms. Ruiz looked directly at him.

"I just did."

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Principal Vale said, very quietly, "Ms. Ruiz, I need to see you in my office after Ethan leaves."

She nodded.

Ethan understood the threat this time.

And when he walked out, he heard Danner say behind the closing door:

"You have no idea what you just cost yourself."
