Chapter 14 - The Students Who Left

The first former student was seventeen-year-old Jonah Pierce.

He had left Westbridge the previous year.

"Mason hit me with a hockey stick after practice," Jonah said. "Not during play. In the equipment room."

Victoria's expression did not change.

"Was that reported?" one trustee asked.

Jonah's mother answered from the doorway. "Yes. We were told the camera malfunctioned."

The second student, Priya Shah, described repeated harassment after she refused to let Mason copy chemistry answers.

"He poured a sports drink into my backpack and said nobody would believe me over him."

The third student, Caleb Morris, spoke the quietest.

"I was the one in the trophy case."

Ethan remembered Ms. Ruiz's report.

Caleb looked at Principal Vale.

"You told my parents it was mutual. I never touched him."

Vale loosened his tie.

Mercer objected that none of this belonged in Ethan's hearing.

Trustee Helen Cho, who had said almost nothing, interrupted him.

"Actually, counsel, I think it belongs here very much."

Victoria turned sharply. "Helen."

Cho ignored her.

"Principal Vale, were incident reports changed?"

Vale glanced at Mercer.

"Reports are often clarified."

Ms. Ruiz opened the folder.

"Here are originals and revised versions. Nine incidents. Same pattern. Strong language removed. Mason's role softened. Victims described as participants."

She slid copies down the table.

Danner stood.

"These documents were taken without authorization."

"They're my own reports," Ms. Ruiz said.

"They contain protected student information."

"So did the email you sent the entire school implying Ethan was a thief."

Danner's face turned red.

Pike leaned toward Ethan.

"Say nothing. Let them talk."

It was good advice.

Because people began talking over one another.

Trustees demanded logs. Mercer demanded a recess. Victoria insisted there was a coordinated attack on her family. Laura asked why Ethan's scholarship status had been changed after he complained.

Then Trustee Cho asked the question that stopped everyone.

"Who authorized Mr. Danner to review a scholarship file during an assault investigation?"

No one answered.

Cho turned to Danner.

"Did Mrs. Whitmore instruct you to do it?"

Danner's mouth opened.

Victoria said, "Do not answer that."

Every person in the room looked at her.

She realized what she had done a second too late.

Pike wrote something on his legal pad.

Maya's father quietly stood and stepped into the hallway to make a phone call.

Victoria pointed toward the door.

"This meeting is over."

"No," Trustee Cho said. "I move that we immediately suspend Principal Vale and Mr. Danner pending independent review."

A trustee seconded.

Victoria stared around the table.

"You cannot be serious."

Before the vote could begin, a security officer entered.

He leaned close to Vale and whispered something.

Vale's face drained of color.

"What?" Victoria demanded.

The officer spoke louder.

"Mason Whitmore is missing from campus."

Ethan's phone vibrated.
