Chapter 6 - Ethan Tells the Truth

Laura Cole arrived at Westbridge still wearing dark blue hospital scrubs.
She had worked a twelve-hour shift and looked exhausted until she saw Ethan's hand.
Then exhaustion disappeared.
"What happened?"
Principal Vale began speaking before Ethan could answer.
"There was a student conflict -"
"I asked my son."
The room went silent.
Laura turned to Ethan. "What happened?"
He had hidden the bruises for months. Long sleeves. Excuses. Basketball. A fall on the bus. Anything that kept her from worrying while she worked nights and tried to keep their tiny house running.
This time, he could not do it.
"Mason hit me before school. He stepped on my hand. Then he stole Dad's watch. Later he held it over the stairwell."
Laura's face changed with every sentence.
"How long?"
Ethan looked down.
"Ethan."
"Since October."
Her eyes filled, but her voice stayed steady.
"It is March."
He nodded.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because you already work all the time. Because this school is my shot at college. Because they keep reminding me what the scholarship costs."
Laura slowly turned toward Principal Vale.
"Did anyone here tell my son his scholarship was connected to whether he complained about being hurt?"
"Absolutely not."
"Did anyone imply it?"
Vale did not answer quickly enough.
Laura pulled out her phone.
"I'm calling the police."
Mr. Danner stood. "Mrs. Cole, I strongly encourage you not to escalate a misunderstanding before all facts are known."
She looked at him as if he had said something obscene.
"A misunderstanding left bruises on my child."
"There are reputations involved."
"Yes," Laura said. "My son's."
Vale raised both hands. "We can arrange mediation."
"With the boy who hit him?"
"It can be productive."
"No."
The word was simple and final.
Outside the office, Ethan whispered, "Mom, if they take the scholarship -"
Laura stopped walking.
"Look at me."
He did.
"A school that charges you your safety is not giving you an opportunity. It's buying your silence."
Ethan's throat tightened.
She reached for his injured hand gently.
"We're done being quiet."
At home that night, Laura photographed every bruise. Ethan showed her Maya's screenshot and told her about Ms. Ruiz's reports.
Then he took out his father's watch.
Laura stared at it for a long time.
"Your dad hated that place," she said.
Ethan frowned. "Westbridge?"
"Not the school. The Whitmores."
She sat down slowly.
"Your father worked on one of Grant Whitmore's construction sites before he died."
Ethan knew that much.
What he did not know was what came next.
Laura opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope with his father's handwriting on it.

Ethan stopped breathing for a second.
"Mom," he whispered, "what is that?"
