Chapter 11 - Victoria Calls the Dead Man's Phone

Collins answered the prepaid phone and put it on speaker.

"Blake?"

Victoria's voice.

Arthur clenched his jaw but stayed silent.

"Blake, answer me."

Collins nodded to Arthur.

He spoke.

"He's busy."

Silence.

Then Victoria whispered, "Arthur."

"Where are you?"

"You don't understand what you've done."

"I found the hidden room. I found the forged guardianship petition. I found the fake passport for my son. Explain which part I'm misunderstanding."

Victoria breathed shakily.

"Graham told me it was legal."

Collins mouthed, Keep her talking.

Arthur said, "Did Graham tell you locking a seven-year-old behind drywall was legal?"

"I never wanted him hurt."

"You wanted him gone."

"Only for a little while."

Arthur felt something inside him break cleanly in two.

"He thought I abandoned him."

Victoria's voice sharpened. "And what about me? You gave everything to Leo. Every plan. Every dollar. Every conversation was about protecting Leo. I was your wife, Arthur."

"So you decided to steal from a child?"

"It wasn't stealing. We were married. It was our future."

Collins wrote another note.

ASK ABOUT DR. KENT.

Arthur did.

Victoria stopped breathing for a second.

"Who told you that name?"

"Your files."

"Arthur, listen to me. Don't involve Nora."

Collins's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

"Because she didn't know everything."

"What did she know?"

Victoria began crying.

It sounded real this time.

"She thought Leo was sick. Graham told her we needed a certificate prepared in case he died outside the country."

"Where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Then tell me where Nora is."

Another pause.

"St. Catherine's Medical Center."

The call ended.

Collins immediately sent officers.

Twenty minutes later, her phone rang.

She answered, listened, and went pale.

"What?" Arthur asked.

Collins lowered the phone.

"Dr. Nora Kent didn't report for work this morning."

"Where is she?"

"Her apartment door was open. Her car is gone."

Arthur stared at the silent prepaid phone.

Then it buzzed with a new text.

A photograph loaded.
