Chapter 3 - The Man With the Red Ring

Arthur carried Leo into the sitting room and locked the door behind them.
Elena stayed close.
Victoria remained outside, pounding once on the wood before going strangely quiet.
Arthur knelt in front of his son.
"You said she wasn't alone. Who was with her?"
Leo rubbed his nose on his sleeve. "The man."
"What man?"
"I don't know his name."
"What did he look like?"
Leo's eyes moved toward the door.
"He had a red ring."
Elena frowned. "A red ring?"
Leo nodded and touched his right hand. "Big one. Here. He kept turning it around when he talked."
Arthur's pulse kicked.
He knew exactly one man who wore a heavy ruby signet ring on his right hand.
Graham Pike.
His family's attorney.
The man who had prepared Arthur's will.
The man who had handled his late father's estate.
The man Victoria had insisted they keep on retainer after their marriage.
"What did he say?" Arthur asked.
Leo's breathing sped up.
"He said I had to stay quiet until you signed something."
Arthur felt cold all the way through.
"What thing?"
"I don't know."
"Did you hear anything else?"
Leo squeezed his eyes shut. "Victoria said if you thought I ran away, you'd stop asking questions after a while."
Arthur stood too fast.
The room tilted.
Elena caught his arm. "Mr. Bennett."
"I'm fine."
He wasn't.
His own wife had hidden his child in a compartment inside his home and apparently involved the family attorney.
And she needed him to sign something.
Arthur dialed 911.
This time he did not hesitate.
"My seven-year-old son was unlawfully confined inside a hidden room in my house. The suspected offender is still on the property."
A crash sounded from the hallway.
Arthur ran to the door and opened it.
The front entry stood empty.
Victoria was gone.
So was her handbag.
Elena came up behind him.
"The security gate is still closed."
Arthur looked toward the staircase.
If Victoria had not left the estate, she was still somewhere inside the mansion.
Then his phone buzzed.
