Chapter 19 - The Room Under the Room

The hidden space behind the library wall had seemed small.

Leo showed them why.

At the back of the compartment, beneath the mattress, was a square metal ring set into the floor.

Arthur pulled it.

A concealed hatch opened.

Cold air rose from below.

A narrow ladder descended into darkness.

Collins went first.

Arthur followed.

Elena remained above with Leo, but the boy called down, "The light is on the left!"

Arthur found the switch.

Fluorescent tubes flickered to life.

The underground room was lined with shelves.

Hard drives.

File boxes.

Phones.

Cameras.

Years of secrets.

Collins stared around her. "This is an archive."

Arthur saw his own name on a box.

Inside were recordings of private arguments, copies of medical records, financial statements, and photographs taken through windows.

Another box was labeled MERCER.

Another RUIZ.

Another carried the names of two families Arthur did not recognize.

Charles had built leverage on everyone.

Then Collins found the server rack.

A technician arrived and began imaging the drives.

Within hours, they found what they needed.

An audio file dated six weeks earlier.

Charles Bennett's voice filled the evidence room.

"The boy goes behind the wall until Arthur signs. If Arthur refuses, move to the death petition. Victoria gets control of the trust, Graham handles probate, and we clean the funds through Meridian."

Pike asked, "And if the housekeeper notices?"

Charles answered without hesitation.

"Housekeepers are replaceable."

Elena's eyes hardened.

Another recording captured Martin saying he had disabled the cameras.

Another captured Victoria discussing the forged abuse statements.

Another had Blake describing the ventilation system inside the hidden room.

There was no longer a missing piece.

By midnight, arrest warrants were signed.

Charles Bennett was taken from his estate in handcuffs.

He said nothing as cameras flashed outside.

Victoria was charged with kidnapping, child endangerment, conspiracy, attempted fraud, and witness intimidation.

Pike, Blake, and Martin faced their own lists of charges.

Sophie Mercer was located safely in Oregon and reunited with surviving family members under the supervision of child specialists.

Rosa gave a full statement.

Arthur should have felt finished.

Instead, that night he found Leo sitting on the floor outside the library.

"What are you doing here?"

Leo looked at the repaired doorway.

"I wanted to see if the wall was gone."

Arthur sat beside him.

"It is."

Leo leaned against his shoulder.

"Dad?"

"Yeah?"

"Are you going to build it back?"

Arthur looked at the hole where his son had nearly disappeared forever.

"No."

May you like

But Leo's next question was harder.

"Are you going to send Elena away now that she saved me?"
