Chapter 12 - The Price of Silence

The photograph came with a message.

DROP THE CHARGES AGAINST GRAHAM AND BLAKE. DELETE THE CAMERA FILE. THEN NORA WALKS AWAY.

Arthur read it twice.

"She's taken a hostage."

Collins was already calling the tactical unit.

Elena looked at Arthur. "She is getting more desperate."

"Good. Desperate people make mistakes."

"They also hurt people."

Arthur knew she was right.

The police traced the photo metadata to nothing useful. Victoria had stripped it clean.

But Dr. Kent's scrubs gave Elena an idea.

"Zoom in on her sleeve."

Collins enlarged the image.

A faint orange smear marked the fabric.

"Rust?" Arthur asked.

Elena shook her head. "Clay. Red clay."

"You know that from a picture?"

"My father did landscaping. That color gets into everything. There isn't red clay around here except near the old quarry roads north of town."

Collins called county deputies.

Arthur looked at Elena with fresh respect.

"How do you keep seeing what everyone else misses?"

She gave him a tired smile. "When you clean houses for rich people, you learn that dirt tells the truth."

They narrowed the search to five abandoned properties near the quarry.

At the third, deputies found Dr. Kent's car hidden behind a barn.

Arthur was ordered to remain three blocks away.

He ignored that order only enough to stand where he could see the property through binoculars.

The tactical team entered.

A minute passed.

Two.

Then a shot cracked across the field.

Arthur flinched.

"No."

Collins listened to her radio.

"Officer safe. Shot hit a wall."

Another voice came through.

"One hostage located. Female, conscious. Suspect fled rear structure."

Arthur scanned the field.

A figure in a dark coat burst from behind the barn and ran toward the tree line.

Victoria.

She crossed fifty yards before slipping in the mud.

An officer reached her.

She fought wildly, scratching and kicking until two deputies restrained her.

Arthur watched them put his wife in handcuffs.

He expected relief.

Instead he felt empty.

Then Collins's radio crackled again.

"Detective, hostage says suspect mentioned another child."

Arthur slowly lowered the binoculars.

"Another child?"

May you like

Collins looked at him.

"Dr. Kent says Leo wasn't their first plan."
