Chapter 15 - Sofia

Hannah forgot Marlow.

She forgot the gun hidden somewhere behind his coat.

She forgot Dominic waiting in the hall.

All she saw was her own face looking back at her with two years of pain inside it.

"Sofia?"

The woman touched the wall for balance.

"Daniel said... you had green in your eyes when you were angry."

Hannah's breath broke.

"You knew my father."

Sofia laughed and cried at the same time.

"Our father."

Marlow snapped, "Enough."

He reached for Sofia.

Hannah stepped between them.

"Don't touch her."

Marlow's expression hardened. "You have no idea what she cost me."

"I don't care."

A red laser dot appeared on Marlow's chest.

Dominic's voice came from the doorway.

"Move away from my wife."

Marlow froze.

Vincent stood behind Dominic with a rifle raised.

Grace cried from the next room.

Sofia's whole body reacted.

"Grace?"

Dominic lowered his gun slightly.

His face collapsed when he saw Sofia.

For two years, Hannah had imagined what reunion might look like in movies.

Running.

Crying.

Kissing.

This was nothing like that.

Dominic took one step.

Sofia flinched.

He stopped instantly.

The pain on his face was brutal.

"Sofia."

She stared at him.

"I remember your voice."

"That's enough."

"No. It isn't."

Marlow moved suddenly.

He pulled a pistol from beneath his coat and grabbed Hannah.

Dominic raised his weapon.

"Let her go."

Marlow pressed the barrel against Hannah's ribs.

"I want a car and the airfield."

Sofia swayed near the wall.

Grace cried again.

Then Sofia looked past Marlow and saw a steel tray on a cart.

She kicked it hard.

The crash startled him.

Hannah drove her elbow backward.

Dominic fired.

Marlow dropped.

Vincent rushed past him and opened the side room.

Grace sat on a mattress, frightened but unharmed.

Dominic picked her up.

Grace looked over his shoulder at Sofia.

The room went silent.

Sofia stretched out a shaking hand.

"Hi, baby."

Grace stared.

Then her lower lip trembled.

"Mama."

Sofia sobbed.

Dominic turned away for one second, unable to hide his face.

Hannah put an arm around her sister.

For the first time in twenty-six years, the Mercer twins stood together.

Then Vincent checked Marlow's phone.

His expression changed.

"Boss."

Dominic looked at him.

"What?"

Vincent held up the screen.

May you like

A message had been sent ten minutes earlier.

MOVE THE OTHER TWO NOW.
