Chapter 7 - The Voice Behind the Door

Vincent fired first.
The bullet punched through the metal door near the lock.
Someone outside ran.
Dominic yanked the door upward just enough for Vincent to roll beneath it.
Hannah heard shouting, footsteps, then the hard impact of a body hitting concrete.
Thirty seconds later, Vincent dragged a terrified teenage employee into the unit.
"Not him," Vincent said. "Somebody paid him five hundred dollars to close us in."
Dominic looked at the boy. "Who?"
"I don't know. Guy in a baseball cap. He said it was a prank."
"Cameras?"
"Parking lot only."
Dominic told Vincent to get the footage.
Hannah barely heard them.
She pressed play on the recorder again.
Her father's voice returned.
"Elena went into labor early. There was heavy bleeding. I was pushed out of the room. When the doctor came back, he told me your mother was dead and one baby had died with her."
Hannah's throat closed.
"But I heard two babies crying before they took me away. I knew what I heard. Nobody believed me."
Dominic stood perfectly still.
"Years later, I found a nurse who remembered the delivery. She said a young man arrived with papers signed by the hospital administrator. He left with one infant. The name on the paperwork was Sebastian Vale."
Hannah looked at Dominic.
His face had become unreadable.
The recording clicked.
"I found Sofia after she married into the Vale family. She had no idea who she really was. When I told her, she thought I was trying to extort her. Then she saw the photographs. She believed me."
Hannah wiped tears from her face.
"She wanted to meet you, Hannah. I begged her to wait until I understood why Sebastian took her. Then she disappeared."
A cough shook Daniel's voice.
"If Dominic Vale is with you now, listen carefully. I do not know whether he is part of it. Do not trust his name. Trust what he does."
The recording ended.
Dominic did not defend himself.
That unsettled Hannah more than anger would have.
"Say something," she demanded.
"Your father was right."
"About what?"
"You should not trust my name."
He looked at the birth record again.
"My father built half his business with Sebastian. Men disappeared around both of them. I spent years believing I knew where the worst lines were. Maybe I didn't."
Vincent returned holding a tablet.
"We got the parking footage."
He froze the image of a man in a cap handing cash to the employee.
The face was mostly hidden.
But on his right wrist was a black tattoo shaped like a crown split down the center.
Dominic swore.
Hannah looked at him. "You know it?"
"It's not a street gang. It's private security."
"Whose?"
Dominic turned the tablet toward her.
"Sebastian's."
Then Dominic's phone rang.
He answered.

Rosa was screaming on the other end.
"Dominic, the safe house is gone."
