Chapter 20 - Three Stars, One Sky

Six months later, Bellafonte offered Hannah her old job back.

She laughed for nearly a minute.

Then she politely declined.

Her life had become complicated in ways no waitress schedule could survive.

Sofia was recovering in a quiet townhouse two blocks from Central Park.

Some memories returned in flashes.

Others did not.

She remembered the girls.

She remembered Daniel Mercer.

She remembered enough of the weeks before her disappearance to testify.

What she did not remember clearly was her marriage.

Dominic never pressured her.

That surprised Hannah most.

He visited every day, but he slept elsewhere.

He brought the girls.

He answered questions.

When Sofia asked for space, he gave it.

When she asked for the truth, he did not soften it.

Sebastian survived the gunshot and was charged after leaving the hospital.

Dr. Marlow's records exposed the old adoption scheme.

Owen Pike took a deal in exchange for testimony about the confinement operation and the warehouse fire that killed his brother.

None of it repaired what had happened.

But for the first time, people were forced to name it.

Hannah used part of her father's remaining estate to create a legal fund for families searching for missing adoption records.

The rest she kept simple.

Rent.

Coffee.

A life that belonged to her.

She visited Sofia every Sunday.

The triplets called her "Mama" for another two months because nobody had the heart to correct them too sharply.

Hannah would laugh and say, "Close, but not quite."

Then one Sunday, Emma touched Hannah's cheek.

"Han-na."

Hannah froze.

Lily clapped.

"Hanna!"

Grace pointed at Sofia.

"Mama."

Then at Dominic.

"Daddy."

Then at Hannah again.

"Hanna."

Sofia covered her mouth and started crying.

Hannah did too.

Dominic stood near the doorway holding a tray of coffee he had clearly forgotten to put down.

"Well," he said, voice rough, "I guess they've settled the argument."

Hannah wiped her face. "They usually do."

The girls ran back to their blocks.

Three small voices now filled the room with unfinished words, demands, laughter, and arguments about who owned the red tower.

For two years, everyone had treated their silence like a problem to solve.

In the end, their first word had solved everyone else.

It led Hannah to the sister stolen from her family.

It forced Dominic to look at the empire he had inherited and decide what kind of father he wanted to be.

It dragged a buried crime into daylight.

And it brought Sofia home.

That evening, rain tapped softly against the windows.

Sofia sat on the rug with her daughters while Hannah watched from the couch.

Dominic knelt nearby, pretending not to lose a battle over wooden blocks.

Grace suddenly stacked three stars from a shape puzzle on top of one another.

Sofia smiled.

"Three stars," she said.

Dominic looked at her.

For the first time, the old phrase did not hurt.

"One sky," he answered.

Hannah touched the silver locket at her throat.

Inside it, behind the old photograph, she had placed a new one.

Two sisters.

Three little girls.

One father learning how to begin again.

No secrets.

No erased names.

No locked doors.

Emma climbed into Hannah's lap and whispered, "Hanna stay."

Hannah kissed the top of her head.

"I'm staying."

Across the room, Sofia heard her.

She smiled.

May you like

And this time, nobody in the family had to wonder what the word meant.

THE END
