Chapter 2 - The Woman in the Photograph

"Take your hand off my necklace."
Hannah's voice shook, but she did not move away.
Dominic had reached toward the locket without thinking. He stopped an inch from her throat.
"Open it."
"No."
"Please."
The word sounded strange coming from him.
Hannah studied his face, then snapped the locket open.
Inside was a faded photograph of her father holding a newborn wrapped in a white hospital blanket.
Nothing else.
Dominic stared at it for several seconds.
"Turn it over."
"Why?"
"Because Sofia's had an engraving."
Hannah flipped the locket.
The metal was scratched from years of wear. Near the hinge, almost invisible, were three tiny letters.
S. M. R.
Dominic grabbed the edge of the table.
Vincent whispered, "Boss?"
"Get the car."
Hannah stepped back. "I'm not going anywhere with you."
"Then we do this here."
"Do what?"
Dominic pulled out his phone and opened a photograph.
A woman stood on a beach with wind in her dark hair, laughing toward the camera. She wore a white shirt, no makeup, and an oval silver locket at her throat.
Hannah forgot how to breathe.
The woman had her face.
Not similar.
Not close.
Her face.
Same green-brown eyes.
Same narrow chin.
Same small mark beneath the right ear.
Hannah snatched the phone.
"Who is she?"
Dominic watched her like a man standing at the edge of a roof.
"Sofia. My wife."
"No."
"She disappeared two years ago."
"No."
"Three weeks after the girls were born."
Hannah shook her head hard. "I don't have a sister."
"I didn't say you did."
"You didn't have to."
Emma began reaching for her again.
Hannah backed into a chair.
Her father had raised her alone in Queens. Her mother, according to every story she had ever heard, died during childbirth. There had been no sister. No second baby. No secret family.
"My father would have told me."
Dominic's jaw tightened. "People lie when they're afraid."
"You don't know anything about him."
"I know Sofia had been looking for someone before she vanished."
Hannah stared at him.
"Who?"
Dominic looked at the locket.
"A man named Daniel Mercer."
The room tilted.
Hannah's father's name had been Daniel Mercer.
She felt the blood drain from her face.
Dominic saw the answer before she spoke.
"That's your father."
Hannah swallowed.
"He died fourteen months ago."
Dominic turned to Vincent.
"Get Dr. Reeves. Quietly. I want DNA tonight."
Hannah snapped her head up. "You are not taking my blood."
Dominic looked at the three girls.
Then back at her.
"If I'm wrong, you walk away with an apology."
"And if you're right?"
May you like
His eyes hardened.
"Then somebody buried the truth before they buried my wife."
