Chapter 1 - The Camera Went Dark

The red light on the security camera died at 4:17 p.m.

Mrs. Marissa Vale watched it disappear, then slowly turned toward the only child still sitting in Room 214.

Ethan Cole knew something was wrong before she said a word.

The late-afternoon classroom was almost empty. Sunlight stretched across the desks in long orange bars. Backpacks were gone. Chairs had been pushed in. Even the hallway had grown quiet.

Mrs. Vale slid the camera cable behind a bookshelf as if she had done nothing more serious than unplug a lamp.

Then she picked up the wooden ruler from her desk.

“Why didn’t you let Logan copy your test?”

Ethan blinked. “What?”

“You heard me.”

Her voice was low now. Controlled. That scared him more than yelling would have.

Ethan looked at the paper on his desk. He had scored ninety-six. Logan Vale, the teacher’s son, had leaned across the aisle during the test and whispered for answers. Ethan had covered his page and told him no.

Mrs. Vale moved closer.

“Logan said you embarrassed him.”

“He was trying to cheat.”

“He asked for help.”

“He asked me for answers.” Ethan’s small hands tightened around the edge of the desk. “Because he’s your son, we’re supposed to let him cheat?”

The change in her face was instant.

Her cheeks flushed. Her mouth flattened.

“Stand up.”

Ethan’s heart began to pound. “I didn’t do anything.”

“Stand. Up.”

He rose slowly.

Mrs. Vale glanced once at the dead camera.

“Hand out.”

Ethan stared at the ruler.

“No.”

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Mrs. Vale stepped closer. “Excuse me?”

“I want to call my dad.”

“You’ll call him when I say you can.”

Ethan backed into his desk. The metal legs scraped loudly against the floor.

Mrs. Vale grabbed his wrist.

He gasped. “Let go!”

“Hand out.”

His eyes filled with tears. He lifted his free hand because he was scared of what would happen if he did not.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

The ruler came down.

And three floors away, inside a dark security room, a monitor that should have stayed black suddenly flickered back to life.
