Chapter 12 - The Principal's Choice

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

Daniel looked at Principal Ward.

Helen did not deny it.

The district administrator beside her said, “Is that true?”

Helen closed her eyes.

“Not the way she means it.”

Mrs. Vale laughed. “Of course.”

“Helen?” the administrator pressed.

The principal sat down slowly.

“Parents would come in angry. Sometimes they wanted formal complaints. I encouraged mediation first.”

“Did you discourage written reports?”

Helen’s silence answered.

Daniel felt disgust rise in his throat.

“You were protecting your numbers.”

She looked at him. “I was trying to keep situations from escalating.”

“You kept them from being documented.”

“I thought I was solving problems.”

“No,” Daniel said. “You were making the problems disappear on paper.”

Mrs. Vale crossed her arms with satisfaction.

Principal Ward turned toward her. “Do not look pleased. You hurt children.”

“And you kept me here.”

The words hit.

Helen’s face collapsed.

The district administrator asked for every parent-contact log, counseling note, and disciplinary record connected to Room 214.

Helen nodded.

Then she did something Daniel did not expect.

She handed over her office keys.

“I failed these children.”

The administrator looked surprised.

“I should have acted earlier,” Helen continued. “I told myself I needed stronger evidence. I told myself Marissa was difficult but effective. I told myself parents were emotional. Those excuses helped me avoid a fight.”

Her voice shook.

“And a child got hurt because I avoided it.”

Ethan, sitting outside the glass conference-room wall, could not hear every word, but he could see adults finally looking afraid of the truth instead of afraid of paperwork.

Daniel went to him.

“We’re going home.”

Ethan nodded.

As they walked toward the exit, Logan ran after them.

“Ethan!”

Ethan turned.

Logan stopped several feet away.

“I’m sorry.”

Ethan looked at him for a long moment.

“I’m still mad at you.”

“I know.”

“But I’m more mad at her.”

Logan wiped his eyes.

Then he held out a folded sheet of paper.

“I found this in Mom’s bag.”

Ethan opened it.

At the top was his name.

Below it was a transfer recommendation dated three weeks earlier.
