Chapter 4 - The Run Down the Hall

Daniel did not slow down.
Principal Ward hurried beside him. “Mr. Cole, please, let me handle this.”
“You can explain while we walk.”
“It may be a misunderstanding.”
“I watched her hit him.”
Helen said nothing.
That silence told Daniel more than any denial could have.
They reached Room 214. Daniel grabbed the handle.
Locked.
He knocked once. “Ethan?”
Inside, something scraped across the floor.
“Dad?”
The fear in his son’s voice turned Daniel’s blood cold.
Mrs. Vale answered quickly. “Mr. Cole, we are in the middle of a disciplinary conversation.”
“Open the door.”
“Ethan has been disruptive.”
“Open. The. Door.”
Principal Ward stepped forward. “Marissa, unlock it.”
There was a pause.
Then the lock clicked.
Daniel pushed the door open.
Ethan stood beside his desk with one hand pressed against his chest. His eyes were wet. A chair lay on its side. Mrs. Vale stood near the teacher’s desk, the ruler no longer in her hand.
It was on the floor behind her.
Daniel crossed the room and crouched in front of his son.
“Show me your hand.”
“I’m okay.”
“Buddy. Show me.”
Ethan slowly opened his fingers.
A red mark crossed his palm.
Daniel closed his eyes for one second.
When he stood, his voice was calm.
“Did you strike my son?”
Mrs. Vale folded her arms. “I used a classroom ruler to correct inappropriate behavior. He pulled away and exaggerated the contact.”
Ethan stared at her. “You told me to put my hand out.”
“Ethan,” Helen said softly.
“No.” Daniel looked at the principal. “Don’t manage him. Let him talk.”
Ethan’s lip trembled.
“She unplugged the camera first.”
Mrs. Vale’s expression cracked.
“That is not true.”
Daniel turned toward the wall.
The cable still hung loose behind the bookshelf.
Principal Ward followed his gaze.
Mrs. Vale said quickly, “The camera was malfunctioning.”
Daniel looked back at her. “Interesting.”
“What?”
“Because I was in the security room when it went offline.”

For the first time, real fear entered her face.
Daniel continued, “And I brought it back.”
