Chapter 7 - The Missing Minute

Daniel caught the drawer before Mrs. Vale could slam it shut.

He did not touch her. He simply put one hand on the wooden edge and held it open.

“Step away.”

“This is my private desk.”

Principal Ward’s voice turned hard. “Not anymore.”

Inside the drawer were folders, grade sheets, sticky notes, and a stack of lined paper held together with a black binder clip.

On top was a child’s handwriting.

I’m sorry I told my mom you yelled at me.

I’m sorry for making trouble in class.

Ethan whispered, “Those are from kids.”

Principal Ward lifted the stack with shaking hands.

Mrs. Vale laughed nervously. “Reflection exercises. Every teacher uses them.”

Daniel looked at her. “Do they all make children apologize for reporting your son?”

“You don’t know the context.”

“Then explain it.”

She didn’t.

Helen’s face had changed. She was no longer trying to calm the room. She was reading names.

“Sophie Grant. Noah Patel. Mia Lang…”

Her voice trailed off.

Daniel noticed.

“You recognize them.”

The principal looked up.

“I’ve seen some of these names before.”

Mrs. Vale snapped, “Because they are difficult students.”

“No,” Helen said. “Because their parents contacted me.”

The words dropped into the room like a weight.

Ethan looked at his father.

Daniel’s anger sharpened.

“How many?”

Helen did not answer immediately.

“How many parents?” he repeated.

“Three this semester.”

Mrs. Vale stared at her. “Helen.”

The principal looked sick.

“Three formal concerns. More informal complaints.”

Daniel’s voice became quiet. “And she was still alone with children after school?”

Helen’s eyes lowered.

That was answer enough.

A security technician appeared in the doorway holding a tablet.

“Daniel, we have the recovered feed.”

Mrs. Vale spun toward him.

“All of it?” Daniel asked.

“Almost.” The technician frowned. “There’s one strange gap.”

“How long?”

“Fifty-eight seconds.”

May you like

Mrs. Vale’s eyes flicked toward the tablet.

The technician continued, “But whatever happened during that minute triggered a second recorder she didn’t know existed.”
