Chapter 13 - The Key Was Not for the Locker

Detective Ruiz returned within minutes.
"No one leaves the house."
Officers searched every room, closet, balcony, and service corridor. The broken window had been a distraction. Security footage showed a hooded figure entering through a basement delivery door while the guard ran toward the crash.
Ethan checked his shoe.
The brass key was still there.
Ruiz noticed.
"Union Station locker 318 is open. Why would Victor still want that key?"
Ethan turned it over in his palm.
For the first time, he saw a tiny letter stamped near the teeth.
C.
Margaret frowned.
"That isn't a train-station key. It was used there, but those lockers accept standard old utility keys."
Thomas took it.
"Dad had keys like this for the estate boxes."
They went to the basement safe room.
Along one wall stood rows of old steel lockboxes used before the family's records were digitized.
Most had been emptied years ago.
One box remained locked.
C-318.
Ethan's pulse jumped.
The key turned.
Inside was a thick envelope bearing his grandfather's handwriting.
SARAH - TO BE RELEASED ONLY TO HER OR HER CHILDREN.
Margaret sat down hard.
"My husband must have hidden this from Victor."
The envelope contained a copy of the original trust, a handwritten letter, and a second set of financial instructions naming Daniel Reed as co-trustee.
But the last page mattered most.
If any trustee interfered with Sarah's access to the fund, control transferred immediately to Sarah or her direct descendants.
Thomas looked at Ethan.
"That means Victor lost legal control the moment he blocked your mother's money."
"Then why steal the notebook?"
"Because the notebook proves he knew."
Ruiz studied the letter.
"And this box proves motive for fraud. Maybe for framing your father."
Noah appeared at the basement stairs wrapped in a blanket.
"Ethan?"
Lily hurried after him.
"You were supposed to stay in bed."
Noah ignored her and walked straight to the open box.
He pointed at a small photograph tucked beneath the letter.
Daniel stood beside Sarah, holding newborn Ethan.
Behind them was a young Victor Hale.
On the back, Sarah had written: Victor said Dad's will is wrong. He says Daniel gets nothing. Daniel says we only want our family.
Ruiz's phone rang.
She listened.
Then she looked directly at Ethan.
"Your father's conviction has been stayed pending review."
Ethan stopped breathing.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Daniel is being released into temporary custody tonight."
Lily began to cry.
Noah smiled.
Then Ruiz added, "But there is a problem."
Ethan's joy froze.
"Victor Hale just called the police."
May you like
"Why?"
"He says he has evidence that Daniel Reed helped him steal the money."
