Chapter 8 - Locker 318

Margaret wanted the children to stay at the mansion.

Ethan refused.

"Mom gave me the key."

"That does not mean she wanted you standing in a train station during a police search."

"She wanted me to open something."

Detective Ruiz studied him, then Margaret.

"He comes with me. Only Ethan. Two officers, public place, no heroics."

Lily crossed her arms.

"I'm coming too."

"No," Ethan and Ruiz said together.

Lily glared at both of them.

An hour later, Union Station was packed with holiday travelers dragging suitcases beneath giant wreaths. Ethan stayed between Ruiz and a uniformed officer while Margaret followed three steps behind.

Locker 318 sat near a row of vending machines.

The brass key slid in perfectly.

Ethan's hand shook.

"Do it," Ruiz said.

He turned the key.

Inside sat a blue canvas bag.

Nothing else.

Ruiz removed it with gloved hands and opened the zipper.

First came letters.

Dozens.

All addressed to Margaret Caldwell.

Then photocopies of bank statements.

A small digital recorder.

A red notebook.

And a sealed legal envelope marked: FOR MY CHILDREN IF DANIEL DOES NOT COME HOME.

Ethan stopped breathing.

"Dad?"

Margaret looked at Ruiz.

Ethan had not said his father's name much. After Sarah died, every question about Daniel had ended the same way.

Missing.

No confirmed death.

No contact.

Gone almost two years.

Ruiz opened the red notebook carefully. Sarah had written dates, names, grant amounts, and notes about meetings.

One name appeared over and over.

Victor Hale.

Beside his name, Sarah had written: HE SAYS DANIEL STOLE FROM THE FOUNDATION. HE IS LYING.

Another page read: PIKE HAS THE CHILDREN'S FILES. VICTOR PAYS HIM CASH.

Margaret sat down on a bench.

"My God."

Ruiz pressed play on the digital recorder.

Static filled the air.

Then Sarah's voice.

Weak. Breathless. Alive.

"If you are hearing this, I either reached my mother too late... or Victor reached me first."

Ethan grabbed the edge of the locker.

His mother's voice continued.

"Daniel did not abandon us. He was framed. Victor told me Daniel would never see the children again unless I stopped asking about the Caldwell trust."

Ethan's eyes burned.

The recording crackled.

Then Sarah said the sentence that changed everything.

"Daniel is alive."
