Chapter 16 - What Margaret Hid

Back inside, Margaret locked the library doors.

"My husband distrusted Victor near the end of his life," she said. "He made a second original of the estate documents and put them somewhere Victor could never reach."

Thomas stared at her.

"You knew?"

"I knew there was another original. I did not know Victor had altered anything until tonight."

"Where is it?"

Margaret looked at the fireplace.

Above it hung an oil painting of the mansion in summer.

She removed the frame from the wall.

Behind it was a narrow safe.

Ethan almost laughed from disbelief.

"Seriously?"

"Your grandfather enjoyed old movies."

The safe opened with Margaret's fingerprint.

Inside was a sealed leather folder.

Ruiz photographed every page.

The will confirmed everything Sarah's hidden box had suggested. Victor had no authority to control Sarah's trust after she married Daniel. He also had no authority to send foundation money to Hope House without two family signatures.

Thomas stared at the forged pages Victor had filed years earlier.

"He copied Dad's signature."

Ruiz nodded.

"And probably Daniel's."

A voice came from the hall.

"Put the folder on the floor."

Everyone froze.

Victor Hale stood in the doorway holding a gun.

His gray suit was torn at one shoulder. Snow melted in his hair.

He looked nothing like the polished attorney from charity photographs.

Daniel stepped in front of the children.

"You took Lily."

Victor's hand shook.

"I moved her. I did not hurt her."

"You put a seven-year-old in a locked cellar."

"Because none of you would listen!"

Ruiz slowly moved her hand away from her coat.

"Victor, the property is surrounded."

"Then I need one minute."

He looked at Margaret.

"You were going to destroy everything I built because Sarah married some mechanic."

Margaret's face hardened.

"You destroyed yourself."

Victor laughed.

"Your husband put me in charge and then tied my hands with sentimental nonsense. Sarah would have burned through the trust in five years. Daniel would have helped her. I protected the estate."

Ethan stepped from behind his father.

"My mom died cold."

Victor looked at him.

Ethan's voice shook, but he did not stop.

"We ate soup from cans for dinner. Noah slept in his coat. You call that protecting something?"

Victor's face changed for half a second.

Then he raised the gun toward the leather folder.

"Put it down."

Margaret did.

Victor bent to grab it.

That was his mistake.

Lily kicked the library door shut behind him.

The heavy oak door slammed into Victor's shoulder.

May you like

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Daniel tackled him.
