Chapter 17 - The Truth on Christmas Morning

The gun slid across the rug.

Ruiz kicked it away.

Daniel and Victor crashed into a reading table, sending books to the floor.

Victor swung wildly and caught Daniel across the jaw.

Ethan started forward.

"No!" Margaret shouted.

Ruiz and an officer pulled Victor down, twisted his arms behind him, and locked cuffs around his wrists.

He kept talking.

"You think this fixes anything?"

Ruiz hauled him to his feet.

"It fixes your access to exits."

Victor looked at Margaret.

"Sarah hated you."

Margaret flinched.

Ethan stepped between them.

"No, she didn't."

Victor smiled cruelly.

"How would you know?"

"Because she talked about her every Christmas."

The smile disappeared.

Officers took Victor away.

By sunrise, Malcolm Pike was also under arrest. Victor's phone contained years of messages about falsified invoices, redirected grants, altered files, and payments to keep Hope House children from receiving outside advocates.

The fire had not destroyed enough.

Neither had the lies.

At eight in the morning, Detective Ruiz returned with coffee and a folder from Children's Hospital.

"Daniel's alibi checks out. Security cameras, nurse logs, parking receipts. The signature on Victor's statement is already under forensic review."

Daniel sat at the kitchen table with an ice pack against his jaw.

"So what happens now?"

"The state will move to vacate your conviction. I can't promise the exact timeline, but you're not going back today."

Noah climbed into his lap.

"Good."

Everyone laughed.

Even Ruiz.

Then Ethan noticed Margaret standing alone by the kitchen window.

Outside, snow covered the spot where the children had stood the night before.

He went to her.

"You okay?"

"No."

He waited.

"I spent eleven years believing your mother chose silence," Margaret said. "She spent eleven years believing I chose it."

Ethan looked down.

"She kept writing."

"I know."

"She kept hoping."

Margaret nodded.

"I know."

Ethan reached into his pocket and removed the plastic bag containing Sarah's final note.

He handed it to her.

MOTHER, I NEVER STOPPED WRITING YOU.

Margaret pressed the paper to her chest.

Behind them, Noah shouted.

"It's Christmas!"

Lily answered, "It's been Christmas all night."

"But now Dad is here."

That silenced the room.

Daniel looked at his children.

"Yeah," he said. "Now I'm here."

Ethan wanted that to be the end.

Then Detective Ruiz's phone rang one more time.

She listened, frowned, and looked toward Daniel.

"We found Sarah's last hospital file."

Daniel stood.

"And?"

May you like

Ruiz's face turned serious.

"There was a visitor the night she died."
