Chapter 11 - Forty-Two Million

Claire sat down hard.

“No.”

Walter did not argue.

He opened a folder from the evidence bag police had returned to him.

“Your father was comptroller at Hale Meridian. He approved transfers through six shell companies over nine years.”

Claire’s eyes filled. “He hated Victoria.”

“He did.”

“Then why would he help her?”

“Because she paid for your mother’s cancer treatment.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Nathan turned away.

Elena felt the room change again. Every villain had a story. Every victim had a compromise. Nothing stayed clean for long.

Walter continued. “Your father later tried to expose the transfers. Pike found out. Victoria agreed to forgive the medical debt if your father stayed quiet.”

Claire whispered, “He died thinking I hated him.”

Walter looked down. “I’m sorry.”

Elena asked the question that mattered most now.

“Where did the money go?”

Walter looked at Nathan.

“Into a private fund designed to keep control of Hale Meridian inside the family.”

Nathan frowned. “I don’t understand.”

“Your grandfather’s original trust required outside review if family ownership dropped below fifty-one percent. Victoria used hidden money to buy shares through shell companies and keep voting control.”

Elena’s mind raced. “So the forged agreement was not just about my company.”

“No,” Walter said. “Your hotel contract would have been used as collateral for another purchase.”

Nathan sat down slowly. “She was going to use Elena’s company to hold mine.”

Walter nodded.

The doors opened.

Detective Alvarez stepped in.

“We found Victoria.”

Nathan stood.

“Where?”

“At the old Hale Meridian headquarters.”

“Is she okay?”

“She’s alive.”

Elena saw the hesitation.

“What aren’t you telling us?”

Alvarez looked at her.

“She is on the roof. Daniel Pike is with her.”

Nathan started for the door.

Alvarez blocked him. “No.”

“That’s my mother.”

“And it is an active hostage situation.”

Elena’s phone buzzed again.

This time, the call came from Victoria’s number.

Everyone stared at the screen.

Elena answered.

Victoria’s voice was shaky.

“Elena, listen to me carefully.”

A man shouted in the background.

Then Victoria whispered, “Pike says he’ll let me go if you sign the contract.”
