Chapter 5 - The Woman on the Balcony

Claire disappeared from the balcony before Elena could reach the stairs.
Nathan followed.
“Elena, wait.”
She did not.
Her wedding shoes struck the marble steps hard enough to hurt, but she welcomed the pain. It gave her something simple to focus on.
At the top, she found Claire in a service hallway, pulling off her catering jacket.
She was about thirty, with tired eyes and a scar near her chin.
Nathan stopped ten feet away.
“Claire.”
Claire looked at Elena. “I’m sorry.”
“For sending the video?”
“For waiting until tonight.”
Elena folded her arms. “How do you know my husband?”
Nathan answered first. “We grew up together.”
Claire gave him a sharp look. “That’s one way to say it.”
Elena’s stomach turned.
Nathan rubbed both hands over his face. “We dated in college.”
“For four years,” Claire said.
Elena looked between them. “And?”
Claire reached into her bag and pulled out a small flash drive.
“Victoria tried to do the same thing to me.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Elena’s anger sharpened. “You knew?”
“I knew my mother hated Claire. I did not know about the contracts until later.”
Claire laughed bitterly. “Later meaning after she had me fired, threatened my father’s medical coverage, and convinced Nathan I had taken money from his family.”
Nathan stared at the floor.
Elena asked, “Did you?”
“No.”
Claire held up the drive. “This has bank records, emails, and one audio file from Victoria’s old assistant. I have spent five years trying to prove what she did.”
Nathan stepped toward her. “Why didn’t you send this to me?”
“I did.”
He froze.
Claire’s voice softened. “Three times.”
Nathan shook his head. “I never got anything.”
Elena already knew who had intercepted it.
Victoria.
Below them, the ballroom doors slammed.
A server ran into the hall, breathless.
“Ms. Marlowe, there’s a problem.”
“What?”
“Mrs. Hale just left with your laptop bag.”
Elena’s blood went cold.
Her laptop contained copies of every contract Marlowe Events had signed in the last eighteen months.
Including the hotel deal.
Including access credentials to a protected client portal.
Nathan was already running toward the stairs.
Elena grabbed Claire’s flash drive and followed.

By the time they reached the ballroom entrance, Victoria was gone.
And so was Walter Keene.
