Chapter 17 - The Box in Baltimore

Ross Bell agreed to meet only Elena.

Detective Alvarez rejected that immediately.

So they compromised.

The next afternoon, Elena drove to Baltimore with Alvarez in an unmarked car behind her and two officers stationed nearby.

She had changed out of her wedding dress hours earlier, but she still felt like she was carrying it around her body.

Ross chose a quiet diner near the harbor.

He was seventy, thin, and looked permanently tired.

“You look like your father,” he said.

Elena sat across from him. “You watched him for years.”

Ross nodded once.

“I did things I’m not proud of.”

“That seems to be a popular sentence around the Hale family.”

He accepted the hit.

Then he slid a small key across the table.

“Your father rented a safe-deposit box under my name.”

“Why?”

“Because he knew Victoria’s people monitored him.”

“What’s inside?”

“Proof the platform collapse was not an accident.”

Elena stared at him.

Ross explained that Hale Meridian executives had been warned about structural problems at the facility. Repairs were delayed to avoid missing quarterly targets.

Her father found internal emails proving it.

“He wanted to go public,” Ross said. “Then the company threatened to drag the case out for years. Your mother was already sick. You were in school. He took the settlement.”

Elena’s eyes burned.

“So he gave up.”

“No. He hid copies.”

Ross pushed the key closer.

“He said one day you might need the truth more than he needed revenge.”

Elena looked down.

Her father had been dead six years, and somehow he had just handed her a choice.

“Did Pike know?”

“Recently, yes.”

“Did he hurt my father?”

Ross shook his head. “No. Your father died from illness. But Claire’s father…”

He stopped.

“What?”

“I saw Pike meet him the night he died.”

Elena leaned forward.

“Can you prove it?”

Ross looked through the diner window.

His face changed.

A black SUV had stopped across the street.

Ross stood abruptly.

“Elena, leave through the kitchen.”

“What is it?”

May you like

“The man in that car works for Pike.”

Before Elena could respond, the diner’s front window exploded inward.
