Chapter 18 - The Truth in the Box

The crash was not a gunshot.

A metal trash can had been thrown through the diner window to create panic.

People screamed and ducked.

Ross pulled Elena toward the kitchen.

Detective Alvarez and two officers rushed in from the side entrance.

The black SUV sped away.

No one was seriously hurt.

But the message was clear.

Pike knew Ross was talking.

Police moved them to a secure location, then retrieved the safe-deposit box under guard.

Inside were printed emails, engineering reports, photographs, and a small digital recorder.

Elena listened to her father’s voice for the first time in years.

“If you’re hearing this, Ellie, then the truth finally became more useful than my silence.”

She covered her mouth.

Nathan stood outside the room behind the glass wall. He had asked permission to come. Elena had not invited him inside.

Her father’s recording continued.

He described the failed safety inspections. The pressure from executives. The private settlement. Then he named the executive who personally ordered repairs delayed.

Thomas Hale.

Nathan’s late grandfather.

Elena looked through the glass at Nathan.

He saw the answer on her face.

The recording had one final message.

“Do not punish children for the sins of their parents. But do not marry into a lie just because love makes the truth inconvenient.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Her father could not have known Nathan.

Yet the sentence felt written for her.

Alvarez entered with new information.

Police had identified the SUV.

It belonged to a shell company connected to Pike.

Traffic cameras had followed it to an abandoned warehouse near the river.

“Pike may be there,” Alvarez said.

Claire asked, “Alive?”

“We believe so.”

Walter frowned. “Why stay in the city?”

Elena looked at the files.

“Because he doesn’t want to run.”

Nathan entered despite the tension.

“What does he want?”

Elena finally understood.

“He wants control of Hale Meridian. He has enough evidence to destroy it, but destruction doesn’t pay if the company dies.”

Walter nodded slowly.

“He’s blackmailing the board.”

Nathan’s phone rang.

Pike.

Nathan answered on speaker.

Pike sounded almost cheerful.

“Bring your mother, your wife, and the evidence.”

May you like

Nathan said, “Why?”

“Because tonight the Hale family chooses who owns the truth.”
