Chapter 14 - What Her Father Hid

Elena had spent twenty years believing her father’s injury came from a construction accident.

That was what he told everyone.

The archive told a different story.

He had been injured at a Hale Meridian shipping facility when an overloaded platform collapsed. Three workers were hurt. One later died.

The company paid private settlements.

No public lawsuit.

No admission of fault.

Elena read the documents with numb hands.

Her father had signed a confidentiality agreement.

Nathan stood across from her, horrified.

“I didn’t know.”

“I believe you.”

It was the first time she had said those words that night.

He looked almost more wounded by them than by her anger.

Walter read over her shoulder. “This explains why Victoria targeted your company so aggressively.”

Elena frowned.

“How?”

“Your father’s settlement included an unusual clause. If Hale Meridian was ever found to have concealed safety violations connected to that collapse, the confidentiality agreement would dissolve.”

Claire understood first. “And the company could face new claims.”

Walter nodded.

Elena stared at the dates.

Her father had died six years earlier after a long illness.

He never told her.

Maybe he wanted to protect her.

Maybe he was ashamed.

Maybe both.

Nathan sat beside her, careful not to touch her.

“My family has been inside your life longer than either of us knew.”

Elena swallowed tears. “And your mother knew exactly who I was when we met.”

Walter’s expression said yes.

Nathan stood so fast the chair hit the wall.

“She introduced us.”

Elena looked up.

“What?”

“At the museum fundraiser. Two years ago. She insisted I attend. She sent me to your table.”

The room went silent.

Elena remembered the night perfectly.

Victoria had smiled at her.

So warmly.

So politely.

Nathan had asked Elena for coffee the next morning.

What had felt like chance now looked arranged.

Elena whispered, “Was our entire relationship part of her plan?”

Nathan’s face broke. “No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because whatever she planned, I loved you.”

Elena wanted to believe him.

That was the dangerous part.

Detective Alvarez entered holding a tablet.

“We located Pike’s phone.”

“Where?”

“JFK airport.”

Nathan looked at the screen.

“He’s leaving the country?”

Alvarez shook her head.

May you like

“The phone is moving toward an international gate.”

Then she added, “But security footage shows Pike walking in the opposite direction.”
