Chapter 2 - The Man at Table Twelve

Elena stopped.
Nathan’s hand hovered inches from her wrist, but he did not touch her.
Victoria’s face changed first.
Not fear exactly.
Recognition.
“Sit down, Walter,” she said.
The gray-haired man stepped away from Table Twelve. “No.”
Guests shifted uneasily. Phones appeared in hands. Nathan’s best man whispered something to a server, but nobody dared break the silence.
Elena turned. “Who are you?”
“Walter Keene. I handled legal work for Hale Meridian for twenty-three years.”
Victoria’s voice sharpened. “Formerly handled.”
Walter gave a humorless smile. “Yes. Formerly. Because I refused to falsify a set of documents.”
Nathan looked at his mother. “What is he talking about?”
Victoria ignored him.
Walter reached inside his jacket and pulled out a folded envelope.
Elena’s stomach tightened.
Walter held it toward her. “Your marriage license triggered a transfer clause tied to the Hale family trust.”
“What transfer clause?” Elena asked.
Nathan stared at him. “There is no transfer clause.”
“There is if the eldest Hale son marries before his thirty-second birthday.” Walter glanced at Victoria. “And if the spouse signs the post-wedding family agreement.”
Elena’s pulse jumped.
Victoria had handed her a packet that morning, calling it routine paperwork for the family foundation.
Elena had not signed it.
She had been too busy getting ready.
Nathan’s eyes snapped to his mother. “You said those were charity board documents.”
“They are,” Victoria said.
Walter shook his head. “No. They are not.”
Elena walked back across the ballroom, veil dragging behind her.
“Give me the envelope.”
Victoria stepped between them. “This is absurd.”
For the first time all night, Elena did not move back.
“Get out of my way.”
A murmur passed through the room.
Victoria stared at her, stunned by the refusal.
Then Elena saw something else.
Nathan was looking at Walter’s envelope like he already knew what might be inside.
“Nathan,” she said slowly. “Did you know about this?”
“No.”
The answer came too fast.
Elena knew him well enough to hear it.
Walter extended the envelope again.
Inside was a copy of the family agreement.
On page seven, highlighted in yellow, was a paragraph assigning management control of Elena’s company to Hale Meridian upon marriage.
Elena looked up.
Nathan had gone completely still.
May you like
And that was when she knew the worst part was not Victoria’s plan.
It was that Nathan recognized the document.
