Chapter 1 - The Splash

Olivia Sterling shoved Clara's mother first.
It happened so fast that half the guests thought it was a joke.
One second, Helen Devereux was standing beside the turquoise pool in a modest blue dress, holding her husband's hand. The next, Olivia planted both palms against Helen's shoulders and drove her backward.
"Maybe the water will wash off the smell of poverty," Olivia said.
Robert lunged for his wife. Olivia caught his sleeve, gave him a second hard push, and sent him in after her.
Clara stood ten feet away in her wedding gown, unable to move.
Her father surfaced first. "Helen!"
Olivia looked pleased.
Actually pleased.
Clara turned to Ethan.
"Ethan," Clara said.
He looked at the pool, then at his mother.
"Do something."
His jaw tightened. "Clara, don't make this worse."
The sentence hit harder than the splash.
"Worse?"
Olivia lifted one shoulder. "And now you're cooling off."
Clara heard a few shocked murmurs. She also heard the tiny clink of Ethan's ring against his champagne glass.
He still had not put it down.
Something inside her settled.
Not broke. Settled.
Clara walked to the microphone near the dance floor. Her wet-eyed mother called her name from the pool, but Clara kept moving.
Ethan finally stepped toward her. "Clara. Don't."
She picked up the microphone.
The courtyard went silent.
"The wedding is canceled."
A woman near the front covered her mouth.
Ethan froze. "What did you just say?"
Clara slid one hand beneath the edge of her veil and pulled out her phone.
Olivia laughed. "You think you're embarrassing us? You're embarrassing yourself."
Clara tapped a contact marked MARTIN VALE - GENERAL COUNSEL.
"Martin," she said when he answered. "Execute the contingency plan. Freeze the bridge funding and notify the board that the Sterling guarantee is under review."
Ethan's champagne flute slipped half an inch in his hand.
Olivia's smile disappeared.

Beyond the iron gates, three black sedans turned on their headlights.
Then Ethan whispered, "Clara... what did you just do?"
